The best way to learn Vegas 5

Hello,
I just bought Vegas 5 and have a problem: I don't have a clue as to how to use it.

What would you guys recommend is the BEST way to learn the program. Are there any really good beginner-friendly tutorials that any one has used or knows of? Thanks very much. Tim.

Re: The best way to learn Vegas 5

I spent an entire week just playing around with it. I only ever worked with Pinnacle Studio 9 before messing with Vegas, and of course Vegas just blew me away! I only figured out how to trim clips, create title pages and credits, mess with video and audio transitions and real basic, basic stuff. I dont have a book yet, but the help files and the pdf manual I downloaded were both very useful. But mainly, just getting your hands dirty. I'm sure other people will be able to point you in better directions than this, though. Good luck and have fun! :)

There are quite a few tutorials available out there.

There's the VASST line of training materials.

There's Douglas Spotted Eagle's series of books and training DVDs.

There's also Gary Kleiner's tutorial DVDs.

Re: The best way to learn Vegas 5

Which of those would you recommend? Ive heard of the VASST line quite a few times would that be one of the better ones? Thanks, tim.

I would suggest just opening files and tinkering with every option you find. Just becoming familiar and comfortable, and slowly customizing and you find your own natural workflow.

Get a copy of both Instant Vegas and Vegas 5 Editing workshop to help stimulate your awareness of Vegas's potential functionality, and to help guide you into deeper understanding of what you'll be able to produce with your available tools. Just read them like you would a novel, and when you see something you'd like to explore, try it out and see what you can discover.

Most of the finctionality within Vegas is very intuitive, but there are some very important nooks and crannies too.

Surely to goodness you have spent hours just experimenting with you camera and learning how to use it...so capture that footage into Vegas and just start playing...and dont be in any hurry, just let your creativity have free reign, you wont hurt any of your files, Vegas is non-destructive.

Re: The best way to learn Vegas 5

Both Spot's and my DVDs are well regarded, and many people who have both have commented that the differences in our approaches and emphasis makes it worth having them both.

My web site, www. VegasTrainingAndTools.com, not only has a breif rundown of what's on each of the 5 discs of The Vegas 5 Companion (9 hours of instruction), but an in-depth Index as well.

Thanks,
Gary

Re: The best way to learn Vegas 5

I started in Vegas with version 2.0. I got it after I was familiar with Acid. They were so much alike, the transition to Vegas was easy.

At the time I started, there were very few "How to" books out, at least from my perspective. Jumping from Acid with the music loops, I realized that video clips were basically the same on the time line. It helped just knowing that concept.

There is so much help available now for Vegas, that the hard choice is choosing which one to get! My early days consisted of seeing what someone else had done, and seeing if I could duplicate it. Then, every once in a while, an original idea would pop in my head, and I'd try it. ;D Doing PIP, and key frame stuff soon becomes second nature with Vegas. Composting is easy once learned as are the various filters and effects.

Pick any of the training tutorials out there and just plain mess around with the program. Don't try to learn it all in one night, you won't. Each time you fire it up, you'll learn something and then build on that. Have fun. After numerous completed projects, I've never ever regretting buying or learning Vegas.

Re: The best way to learn Vegas 5

Thanks alot. I can't wait to start messing with it. It will be here in a few days so thanks again.

Re: The best way to learn Vegas 5

I'd recommend starting with http://www.vasst.com/login.htm where you'll find over 1000 Vegas-related resources, including over 400 training files, tutorials, and techniques. There is a LOT there, including downloadable media.

Re: The best way to learn Vegas 5

I doubt if many at this site are as much a beginner as I am. I am a beginner on computers as well as well as my DVX100A. 'Naked Vegas 5' so far is my favorite book. It's especialy great for me because it goes to the heart of the matter very quickly and cuts out alot of fat and stuff that I find confusing. It gives a very specific step 1, step2, step3 approach. It says, do this, now do this type of guidence for each procedure. Very simple, very direct, very clear.

I got 'Vegas 5 Editing Workshop'. Its a great and packed with info but there is stuff mentioned between a basic procedure that is ment to be helpful but looses me. For me this book will be great when I'm a more knowledgeable beginner but like I said I'm more of a beginner than most. Good luck
