The best lighting you've seen...

I'd like this to be here and in the Cafe...but I'll only put it here.

I'm really greatful to know this website and the talented people who visit.

I was wondering if you could post a scene of a pic or just the part in the movie, where you think it's some of the best lighting you've seen; and then how it was done (or what you think was done).

We should get some really good pics here. Also it'll teach what good lighting is and how it was created.

Thanks

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

I'm not going to post any pictures but if you want to see beautiful lighting ratios, watch "The Majestic" with Jim Carey.  That's what classic cinematography/lighting is all about. Also "Legends of the Fall" with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins.

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

I love this thread.

I can't post pics of it, but if you rent any of the "Six Feet Under" DVDs you'll see my vote for some of the best lighting design right now.

I think that entire show illustrates a creative, provocative and compelling use of light and shadow (among other things, like cinematography, scripting, etc.). And they do it in episodic TV.

I also really liked the Light Design in "The Station Agent." It was very natural and organic. And "Love Liza" also had great, organic light design.

More and more I find myself buying DVDs for things like lighting design, cinematography, and production design more than acting or even story.

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

I also forgot "The Natural" as a great example of classic cinematic lighting.

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

"Ill Conformista" by the master Vittorio Storaro. Or just cut to the chase and get the "Visions of Light" dvd put out by the ASC. It's just clip after clip of beautiful lighting.

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

If you watch the "Making Of" segments in the Hollowman DVD you'll not only get a great look at how a lot of cool effects were done, but some of the interviews were lit very well. It was an ominous look, but I really liked it.

Lighting in Seven was amazing.

I'll have to check out that "Visions of Light" DVD.

I really like the lighting in "Dead Like Me" on Showtime and "Boondock Saints". But I can't tell if it's good lighting or not.

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

The best goddamn photography I've ever seen is in "Death in Venice".

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

I don't want to sound cliched/pretentious....but Casablanca has the PERFECT example of classic lighting. Hollywood has obviously become much more subtle over the years, but I can't help but smile when I see them cut from a harsh edged Bogart straight to the softest footage/pantyhose lensed Ingrid Bergman.

Classic!

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

People keep talking about this Casablaca...I'll have to rent it.

P.S. ::)

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

Ali (Emmanuel Lubezki), Road to Perdition (Conrad Hall), City of God (César Charlone), and the Shawshank Redemption (Roger Deakins).

Minority Report (Janusz Kaminski) was great too...

Re: The best lighting you've seen...

As far as classics go... I'd say Rashomon has the best lighting I've seen...

Now this sounds useful. Gotta link?

I was more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of the interior lighting in "The Last Samurai". Lots of effective shadow.

I found it and bought the VHS, but the real bonus was the ASC web site. Books, tapes, DVD's and gear of all kinds. The real value however, are the resources including a "Master Class". Several must-reads.
