The best DVD-R discs?

One of the engineers at my job told me to use Maxell DVD-R discs with the bottom side that is purple to burn my projects to and I have been getting very good results. He said something about the purple sided discs are better than the others. I normally pay around $20 for a pack of 10 at Walmart. These discs are for general purpose though. I am good to just stick with this brand or are they any better DVD-R discs that I should consider kinda like our MiniDV tape that the Master tape is the preferred tape. Is there a preferred DVD-R disc?

Re: The best DVD-R discs?

Taiyo Yuden and Mitsui are great and reliable; they're what the pros use (and can only be bought in bulk). I've never had a problem with these, and they have nice inkjet-printable surfaces available. Maxell printable DVD-R's have ugly Maxel logos in the center ring. Remember: never put a label on a DVD.

Unless you have a real expensive Authoring DVD-R drive, you MUST use DVD-R for General Use.

Re: The best DVD-R discs?

Hi Ullanta. :) when you mean the Pros, you are talking about the big studios? My Toshiba Progressive DVD Player always been very picky with DVD-R... I always wondered why he never had been with original DVDs from Warner, Criterion, etc.

Anybody knows why? I've used different types of blank media to write them on using DVD Studio Pro/Superdrive, tried Verbatim, Sony, Maxell, but the film was freezing sometimes while i was watching it. I'm certainly looking for a media that will allow me to make it play in every possible player, but haven't found a solution yet. (Maybe i should try those Taiyo Yuden, Mitsui, or Apple in my Toshiba Player).

Re: The best DVD-R discs?

Just to give you an example of how picky my Toshiba player is, Jarred's DVXlabs filter tests wouldn't even start. Never been able to watch it on my player, had to go to a friend's.

I paid like 300$ CA for that progressive scan player last year :(

At least its surely a good test for home-made DVDs, so send me your DVDs and i can test them for ya! If they pass the Kandinsky-Toshiba test they are good for sending all over the world :)

Re: The best DVD-R discs?

By "pros", I mean professional duplication houses, NOT professional replication houses... most commercial and high-volume dvds are REPLICATED - pressed from a glass master - rather than DUPLICATED - burned on a DVD-R burner. All DVD players are required to play REPLICATED discs, marked DVD Video. Only those that add the "DVD Recordable" logo are required to play DVD-Rs at all. The long-running standards wars (between +R, -R, etc) have delayed the full support of a recordable media by player manufacturers (such as CD-Rs, which after an initial period have become pretty unproblematic).

To increase reliability, besides using good media, make sure to keep your data rate low enough... also, in some cases, staying well below the capacity of the disc helps... problems often occur with data near the "outer edge" - so if you stay below 4GB, you may see some reliability benefit.

Shooter : you will find your information there http://www.videohelp.com/dvd

Ullanta : Thanks for the info!

Anybody else has recommendations on a particular brand of DVD-R we should use for better compatibility? Right now the top list is Apple, Taiyo Yuden and Mitsui.
