The best audio levels?

My question is pretty simple, yet I can't figure it out. When I record sound into my DVX I usually let it go a little bit into the RED, but when I capture it into FCP the levels stay around 12 db, not anywhere near 0 ('cause that's when the sound is distorted, right). Basically I would like to know what I should set my audio levels to when I shoot: two-three bars into the red, none at all? I'm confused. What's the level when it gets distorted?

0 is wasteland. -12 is a good place for dialog. It's about where it will live in the final mix and it gives you some head room for that sudden "emotion" from the actor. Others do a lot more production than I do but if your averaging -12 I would be happy. I would be very careful if your peaks start getting much above -6. I forget where the DVX goes into red but I think it's around -12, I know it's well before digital clipping.

ask panasonic why they did what they did :-)
you should have your picks at least to secend red -10 dbfs
every dot is 2db
the limiter compressor on dvx kick at -6 dbfs , you can open it to prevent uplesent hittig the digital distortion ( alc-on)

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to get along just fine with a couple of red bars...
now back to the cold rain and slush
