CVP win contract to renew & support entire BBC Journalism camera fleet
16 November 2010 17:41 GMT - Submitted by Phil Baxter

The BBC have today formally announced that after a competitive tendering process CVP have been appointed as the sole supplier for the replacement of their entire journalism fleet of over 200 shoulder-mount ENG cameras which are currently SD (standard definition) and tape based.

After a stringent evaluation process the BBC have selected Sony's PMW-500 and PMW-350 cameras which incorporate solid state recording onto both proprietary and low cost consumer media.
"We're delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract, especially since the BBC's decision now resolves the uncertainty of which format the BBC would choose, thus allowing freelancers and contractors to now upgrade to new tapeless HD equipment in the knowledge that they are BBC Journalism compliant" commented Phil Baxter, CEO of CVP

CVP awarded BBC order for 50 x Canon XF305 camcorders

12 November 2010 11:53 GMT - Submitted by Phil Baxter

The BBC's DV solutions department have today placed an official order for 50 units of the Canon XF305 compact HD camcorder with CVP, the UK's largest supplier of Canon HD equipment.

The XF305 is the first compact camcorder to provide 50Mb/s recorded data rate, thus satisfying the BBC's stringent quality requirements for HD broadcast applications. It records onto solid state CF (Compact Flash) media and has been chosen by the BBC as the successor to the hugely popular Sony HVR-Z1E tape based HDV camcorder.

'"We are delighted that the BBC has placed this order with us as it clearly demonstrates that not only is the Canon XF305 the BBC's preferred handheld HD camcorder but that CVP is the BBC's preferred supplier" commented Phil Baxter, CEO of CVP.

Thanks.

Johnnie

yes i saw that article as well, must admit, i do like CVP as a supplier but when i read their magazine they do come across a bit pro sony all the time..

Interesting that the articles state the BBC chose the XF305 because of the "stringent quality requirements" of the 50mbps codec, yet also selected the PMW-350 with its EX 35mbps codec.

I mean the BBC uses thousands of cameras, CVP is simply advertising a specific order it has one for a particular brand of camera that its happening to be pushing atm. It's simply a trader saying look what i sold - dont you want one too?

I wouldn't read so much into such an order but hey - Cvp will be delighted with there sale!

Dear lawriejaffa.

Ignore the advertising part of this news.

It is a significant move done by the BBC (news) upgrading their tape base SD cameras to those SONY and Canon HD solid state cameras. The majority of those "Journalism Shoulder Mount Field Cameras" will be the PMW-350.

Thanks.

Johnnie

I don't know Opherba, the BBC can afford a lot of cams... and has a huge inventory already, i think filmmakers here burn out there eyes grazing into crystal balls over press releases like this when really it has little relation whatsoever to there own circumstances.

We're not party to the details of the deal, and any large order like that often results from deals/and other elements for which we are blissfully unaware. I mean ive nothing against those Sony cams, but one such supplier singing its own praises for a nice deal does little to convince me of anything too important.

Interesting as to the fact that they choose the Canon. I'm still wondering when we are going to get a good field camera that shoots simultaneously to dual cards. For field use, you would think that would be a big deal for a mfg. to come up with. Having already lost one evening's shoot due to a faulty card, I would be worried about going into Africa for the BBC and shooting stuff with only the cards.

The Canon seems to be a sweet camera if you are going to spend upwards of $5k. Would love to get my hands on one. But you are right, these kinds of deals are often more about sales tactics and field support, than whether the camera is the *best* of a bunch. And we all know that today's highest tech is tomorrows, mid range, and next weeks' old gear.

In Canon's defense, the XF305 is a very good camera. It went through the usual stringent camera tests and scored very well, even for a 1/3" cam. Being the first 1/3" camera to be cleard for full HD acquisition by the BBC is a testament to the XF305's abilities. I sure want one!
