The Amazing Spider-man

"THE UNTOLD STORY....that was already told before in a slightly different way".

At least they have Gwen Stacy in there...it's a step in the right direction, though I wish they just called a moratorium on comic book movies. None of them for at least a year or two!

Does anyone remember that horrible spiderman movie from the 80's. I believe it ended on a freeze frame of him shooting a web right into the camera...so awful, it made the Corman (It was either Corman or Cannon) Captain America look like an epic.

You're thinking of the 70's TV shows--

TBH, I thought the new trailer was the worst of the ones I've seen for this. Yes, even worse than that horrible POV shot. The whole thing looks... I dunno, glitzy and 'glamory' and CG-heavy, but with really horrible CG. I'm less excited for the film now, but still kinda looking forward to it, mostly just because I like Garfield and I like Webber, and Emma Stone is one of my favorite young actresses. She alone will probably be worth the price of admission.

...I saw TASM last night, and I hate to say it, but as I watched it I kept thinking about how much better this movie would have been with Sam Raimi running the show.

TASM was a good movie, but nowhere near as good as Raimi's first Spiderman film.

Agreed. Emma Stone > Kirsten Dunst, but that's about the only aspect of this movie that even stacks up to the Raimi/Maguire version. This movie kinda skipped around, felt a little underwhelming, and the pacing was atrocious. The gags were great -- the whole sequence of him acclimating to his new powers was hilarious -- but I felt like every time I came close to giving a s--t about the characters, we were just thrown into more gags or more action.

He also felt too young -- like this was a kiddie version. The '02 version still had him in high school, but Maguire played older than Garfield plays in this, even though Garfield is 2 years older than Maguire was at the time of the original Spider-Man's release. There was also something a bit more... lovable? ...about Tobey's portrayal, rather than the purely sarcastic new version.

I liked the movie, but releasing it so soon after the originals, Sony was just begging for a comparison and ultimately, Raimi did it better.

Yes, Garfield comes off as a spoiled brat where Maguire seemed much more naive and goofy.

Seeing TASM made me want to run home to watch Raimi's 2002 version again, which is a very bad sign for a new movie.

I think it also has a lot to do with the different characters' treatment of Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Maguire is shown right from the start as being very involved with his adoptive family, whereas Garfield's version is distanced right from the start in order to emphasize the whiny "OMG, I want my daddy!" aspect. Maguire is shown as this really well-meaning nice guy who gets picked on, and only begins to make the wrong decisions when his newfound power confuses him (as it would anyone). Garfield is shown as this sarcastic punk who has his little STC moment in saving the little boy from being picked on -- the only attempt the writers make to show him as "downtrodden" or picked on is in that he doesn't fight back when Flash responds to his name-calling. But there's really no reason for this. He's not shown as some sort of pacifist or principled Uncle Ben type -- just someone who gets his ass kicked for no reason.

!!!!!! SPOILERS !!!!!!!

Garfield was good and Emma Stone was lovable as always. I thought Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben was pretty good too.

I would have like the lizard to have a stronger explanation for what he does.

Not a bad movie but a few times it hit my like a sledgehammer that's it's a decade to soon for a reboot.

3.5/5

I thought this movie was pretty awful. There were only a few moments I actually liked and the rest felt pretty bad. The love scenes between Stone and Garfield were so awkward and their romance came from absolutely nowhere. Shots held awkwardly long at the end of scenes too. Jokes fell flat, barely a laugh for me at all.

I'll take the original trilogy any day, it had so much more to it then this movie did.

I really enjoyed it. Garfield's character sat better for me, rather than the typical awkward geeky guy, it's a rebel outcast. Feels better suited for spiderman.

Love Emma Stone. This is her cutest performance. Had a crush on her character the whole movie.

I also really enjoyed Uncle Ben, and the whole parents plotline.

Lizard was a bit of a dud. Didn't understand why he kept injecting himself. He seemed to like having an arm, despite turning into a giant lizard that terrorizes people? I don't have a missing appendage so I can't assume to know how far one would go to have a new appendage. However I can't help but think I would have my limits, and they would end well before green skin...

I hated the similarities this had to the other films. Citizens banding together to help spiderman, spiderman seen as a menace when clearly he's done nothing wrong, and then that crane scene... ugh... just felt more of the same... It's just too soon...

Still enjoyed it... can't help but feel it was more because of Stone more than anything...
