The Academy doesn't think Cinematography and Editing are important enough!

They aren't being bumped off, the speeches will be shown via tape during the broadcast according to what I read. Only the walkup to the podium will be cut (and presumably the announcement itself). It's by no means ideal, but at least it's not completely eliminated/moved to the technical Oscars.

The Academy had a 20% drop in viewership last year. The show provides 83% of the Academy's revenue with the bulk of the rest of the revenue coming from investments. So the success of the Academy's film preservation, education, and other programs are directly impacted by the continued success of the show. Not watching the show and lowering the ratings of the show will only aggravate the situation for the Academy.

it is a BIG deal.

i am still pissed off.

i know that the award will be given out but the idea that such critical skills are not fully acknowledged is just bad mojo.

Looks like the cinematography branch offered to have their award given during a commercial break. And as Charles says, the speeches will be shown later in the broadcast. In a letter to members, AMPAS writes:

"While still honoring the achievements of all 24 awards on the Oscars, four categories—Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling – will be presented during commercial breaks, with their winning speeches aired later in the broadcast.
And, with the help of our partners at ABC, we also will stream these four award presentations online for our global fans to enjoy, live, along with our audience. Fans will be able to watch on Oscar.com and on the Academy’s social channels. The live stream is a first for our show, and will help further awareness and promotion of these award categories.
The executive committees of six branches generously opted-in to have their awards presented in this slightly edited timeframe for this year’s show, and we selected four. In future years, four to six different categories may be selected for rotation, in collaboration with the show producers. (This year’s categories will be exempted in 2020.)"

So maybe the cinematography branch was given an offer they couldn't refuse. Or maybe some anger should be directed at that branch. Or maybe we'll just lose the walk-on part.

I guess they need more time for bad jokes by the host and more commericals. Probably 90% of the viewers have no clue what cinematography and editing is anyway.

I'm just not convinced that truncating the show to three hours is going to increase viewership. I think the problem is a larger issue, which is that people just aren't watching live TV as much anymore. But I guess we'll see.

Personally I wish they televised the technical awards show. Is there anyplace to watch that full show?

With Peele's nonsensical script winning Best Original Screenplay last year and the bottom-of-the-Marvel-barrel "Black Panther" nominated for Best Picture, it's clear the Oscar's has gone to the Left-side, abandoning valid creativity if favor of "feelings".

I just can't watch any more. Lefties have ended a 36 year love affair.

So what exactly are you saying here, game over Oscars?

Cinematography got too sexy. I am glad.

The academy made the right choice.
