I'd thought about this previously, toyed with it, but hadn't had cause to use it. Found that, naturally, I wasn't the only one:

Recently I worked on a job where the interviewer wanted to interview via speakerphone, and just direct the subject to look at the one-man-band on location, hoping that the subject could keep their attention from wandering to the camera I'd be manipulating, or the phone placed just off-screen nearby, or other distractions. I thought back to Errol & the iPad...
There's no reason to limit this type of application to iProduct. Solutions like Skype work on multiple devices from phones to tablets to PC's to TVs, and don't require WiFi connectivity to be worth a darn.
Secondly, there's no reason this need be limited to iPads. iPad teleprompters will also accept 5-7" production monitors, an item most of us have kicking around. Most modern laptops also have an option of mirrored HDMI out, and the production monitors can usually have their image flipped and inverted. Alternately, one could use an olde-timey classic prompter's monitor from a laptop, but this is less likely practical as a production large enough to travel with a prompter will likely have an on-site producer. A program like Skype also has the option to use an incoming USB or Firewire camera feed as its video source.
So... one could:
-use two tablet devices and discipline themselves to look at the camera
-use a laptop on the camera/interviewee end, pipe the signal out to the prompter, and send a signal in from the interviewing camera itself for a direct, intimate eyeline 3000+/- miles away.
Obviously bigger-end cameras won't have the "webcam" functionality of prosumer kit, which one would have to solve via various adapters and converters to questionable efficacy... but it would work.
Anyway, if any remote producers need a direct eyeline interview in the DC area, glad to give it a trial by fire
