That would be too convenient...

Hey guys, question:

I have two GTECH G-RAID 2 1TB drives that I use with firewire 800. I use one for working off of and the other for a Time Machine back up of my internal and external HD's.

Alas, I'm running out of room on my back up drive to back up both my internal and external plus the history.

I had a thought about how to solve the problem, but it would just be too easy, so I wanted to ask you guys if it was possible.

Since The G-RAID's have two 1TB drives inside, would it be possible to open it up (yes I know about the warranty), unraid the drives and daisy chain them or link them somehow to have a 2tb drive?

Has anyone done something like this before and can say whether it will or won't work?

Worst case scenario I can just slap two new drives in there an link them somehow, the current drives haven't been sounding too good recently.

Thanks!
Jordan

I think if your 1TB Time Machine drive didn't have to backup the other 1TB drive you would be okay with just backing up your internal drive.

You could either get a smaller cheaper drive to backup your internal drive. And use the GRaids to back each other up.

If you have a home network I recommend the Dlink DNS-232, it's a small NAS you can throw in any 2 drives you like, same size of course, and you can have a Raid1, if one drive dies just insert a new one and all your data is back on 2 drives. You can't use it for TM but you can backup all your work on it.

One of my G-Raid's isn't even big enough to back up the other, unfortunately.

I would go with the Dlink, but I move around a fair a mount (I'm not a traveller or anything, not looking for a portable) so I'm looking for something I just plug in when I settle.

I guess I'm just trying to create a JBOD, and want to see if I can pull that off in the G-Raid enclosure with a little handywork, or if I need to buy a new enclosure.

Any suggestions on enclosures that support 2TB+ and/or support more than usb2.0?
