Thai police punished with Hello Kitty!??!?!

Maybe one of our Thai members can explain this more closely:

"It is the pink armband of shame for wayward police officers, as cute as can be with a Hello Kitty face and a pair of linked hearts.

No matter how many ribbons for valor a Thai officer may wear, if he parks in the wrong place, or shows up late for work, or is seen dropping a bit of litter on the sidewalk, he can be ordered to wear the insignia."

The whole story + embarrassing picture

Haha.

It seems like this plan will fail badly.

It seems like it'd make cops very timid to make a quick decision. They'd also get less respect from those they are trying to arrest.

I think they only wear the armbands while inside the police station, not outside in view of the public. And it's not a national policy, as far as I know.

Also, just because they make a "policy" doesn't mean they're going to enforce it. Trust me, they don't enforce any of the laws over here and, if they do, it's because it's "Enforce The Law Day" or some kind of special event.

Bangkok is the only place where I've seen police act like real police and that just happens to be where this Hello Kitty policy is. Everywhere else in Thailand is where the police really need "unusual punishment".

We posted this same story over at Isara a few days ago. :)

I was in Thailand for Christmas / New Years 1996 / 1997 and really loved it. We went to Phuket, Koh Surin (completely destroyed by the tsunami) and Bangkok.

In Bangkok I had the most bizarre experience ever involving a police officer:

We were in a cab driving really fast - I don't know how fast because the speedometer was locked at 0! As we approached an intersection a cop on a motorcycle came at us from the left. The cab smashed into him throwing him over the hood and sending the bike careening into some passers by. We were sure that was the end of our vacation. To my complete bafflement the police officer picked himself up, righted his busted sunglasses, picked up the bike and drove off after checking that we were ok. In the end he wasn't hurt, noone else was hurt and no harm was done

I keep thinking what would have happened if that happened in Europe or the US.

Oh snap! I'd hate to think that anyone would mistake me for a disciplined Thai cop, simply because of my Hello Kitty armband.

Ha! LOL :) :)

morten - That is some story. Wow.

I've seen Thai cops help drunks get onto their motorcycles ...and even start the motorcycle for them. When confronted they just smile and act like nothing happened.
