Hey, I was browsing google video and came across this. It seems like text keying, but I've been trying for about 3 hours now to figure out how it was done. Can anyone help me out? I want to use this in a class project. The link is below

<embed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-1386395509016904900&hl=en" flashvars=""> </embed>

It is in the first few seconds with the guy walking around, and the text behind him. Is this with motion of After Effects?

If the embedded player doesn't work, here is the URL.

Final cut could do this, but you would flip out.

go in to after effects.

Drag your clip into a new composition. DUPLICATE the clip. Grab the pen tool, and go frame by frame, (on the duplicated clip) and draw around the guys head. (or around the subject you want to be infront of the text)
Make sure you close the shape.

Then, type in some text, and put it INBETWEEN your duplicated layers. Voila, your text is now behind the guys (or subjects) face.

You can do this with garbage matte plug ins for Final Cut. You can get some free ones here that are better than the built in ones--

It's tedious work. You basically duplicate a clip into a higher track, put your text between the two layers, put the garbage matte on the top layer and then draw a mask around what you want in front of the text, keyframing it if the subject moves. You can also draw a mask in Motion which integrates better with final cut than AE.

Thanks for your replies.. Is this what some people call, rotoscoping?

Using Motion (thats where my text is from) how would I begin masking each frame?

ok, i am currently masking out in one of the duplicate layers. Somehow, when I go to other parts, where the mask is not supposed to be, the lettering is still blocked out by the mask. any solutions?

Crap, make sure, you set a keyframe, by hitting the stop watch in A.E. THEN go frame by frame, and it should automatically adda keyframe for you. You do this in the Shape property under the Mask. Hit 'm', 'm' (twice) and you'll see Shape, Expansion, Feather,. Set a keyframe on SHAPE and bam, go frame by frame.

Do this on the duplicated layer. LEave the other layer alone. THEN place your text inbetween these two!
