Tethered remote follow focus

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of building some film equipment for myself amd for a film company I started indiefilmgear.com

I just wanted to find out if anyone really needs a tethered remote follow focus? Or is wireless the only thing they would want?

Obviously the tethered version would be cheaper to build and buy.

And if so what features would you like it to have?

I'm aiming at the 500-700 mark for the tethered version. Any thoughts are welcome. I still would design a robust housing for serious work... So it won't be a piece of junk.

Thanks all

A bit about me
I am a working cinematographer with an engineering background and I'm tired of the ultra expensive options out there. So hopefully I can help bring some sanity back into the pricing of quality equipment that we all need. Anyway that's the goal.

I think tethered would work great for Jib and Shoulder mount work.

not so much for stabilizer. but hey, cant have it all for cheap right?

I agree, the jib option would be very useful to have.
I shoot alot of indie stuff still and the focus puller is always up in my grill and i figured just getting him a couple feet away could prove useful while being affordable.

also
What features on the unit would you like?
or is cost more important and keep it to the basics?

would you like to see a simple sonar/distance measurement on it? or is that getting too fancy.

What servo or motor ur using?
do u use any gearbox?

still in early testing with servos and steppers and using micros like the arduino and pic. There is obviously a cost issue involved with price/performance/noise level so trying to weigh all these things right now to get a good affordable unit out there. If you have suggestions I am all ears.

i think its must be wireless,lightweight,quite,small,focus &zoom,ios controller,programmable,and affordable <500k

I would love to do that, but so far pricing out all the tooling, components and time would make that impossible to have it below 500 bucks. A tethered version with less features might hit that mark which is what I'm heading for, and a wireless one will follow but def for more than that. Engineering isn't cheap sir. Just trying to make it more affordable.

Yep ive been waiting for that as well for a long while. But they say it will be at least 1k, if not more. But still there are no final prices.
So the question remains if around $500 is worth it for a tethered one. Def would like others to chime in.

hi
my first post on this forum.
i work in the film industry and i get a lot of moments next to pro cam gear, and i always try and photograph them.
im building a remote follow focus, with end points, this as well as my other stuff im building, matte box, filter holders, rail system, hi def lcd monitor, motorised dolly track, i will be writing up all of this when i have completed each item.
should be a fun build.

cheers
