Testing out some effects

I wanted to try a few effects for the "old film look" in AE

I used footage of 8mm film scanned to the computer..then used AE's Color Burn and some other masking options along with some CC on the actual footage. Tell me what you think of it.

Sorry its so small...i dont know how to render out with QT yet. I'm still trying to figure it out so bare with me. :)

thanks!! :)

Good film look, but the frame rate looks too fast for me.

Well i applied the wiggler to the footage..i forgot what the settings were. Thats probably why it looks fast. The footage framerate is 60i

Perhaps if i either added motion blur or slowed down the wiggler it would look different.

Why reinvent the wheel?
There are may plugins to do this.

Are you serious? What do you think plugins, by their very nature are doing?

And doing things WITHOUT plugins is going to get one a hell of a lot farther.

Instead of the Wiggler.. try using the Wiggle expression:

wiggle(frequency, amplitude)

such as:

wiggle(1, 100)

... is one 1wiggle per second, maximum of 100 above and below your current value

Much more flexible than writing and erasing keyframes from the Wiggler.

Arent they pretty much the same thing?

I should think so, especially since you can just keep hitting Apply over and over until you have one you like.

But, maybe that expression would work in the standard bundle.

Sure, I don't discourage people from experimenting and replicating effects but sometimes a plugin can save you hours of work and have better results.
For instance Digieffects FilmLook does a great job.

But usually plugins make the render times ALOT longer.

Just look at Magic Bullet. I try not to use plugins as much as possible because of render time.

This effect was created with just 3 layers. The 8mm film then 2 layers of the video, one made into a mask and the other plain with CC. Render time is alot better.

The wiggler writes keyframes. To change it, you need to erase your keyframes and redo it.

The expression does not write any keyframes. It is dynamic and variable over time.

Magib Bullet should be kept out of comparisons. It's the slowest of the slowest plugins ever. I only used it for 20 minutes then removed it. Good for render farms only.

Were you using V1 or V2?

Honestly can recall it was about 1 and a half year ago that I checked it so maybe it was version 1.
Is the newer version decent?

One of the new features touted in v2 is :
 • New DeepColor RT real-time Look Suite render engine - up to 12 times faster rendering (does not apply to 24p converter)
The full description is here.
