Testing a Camera.

In another thread, someone mentioned how to test a camera (for public comsumption I guess)

To no hugely thread jack I thought I would comment here

How I test cameras. (Im assuming log!)

1) shoot a gretag card (under a high CRI source) with mid grey at the manufacturers suggested grey level.

Apply the manufacturers lut and check the numbers against these.. using a colour picker not a judgement from your monitor.

2) Set up a wide DR scene in a studio.

typically
a dedo spotting the studio wall (a coloured 3200 spot to blow) though to something coloured deep in shadow.
Also include a person, a colour card, something chrome catching a highlight
some fine weave fabrics and bar codes at different angle.

Shoot the scene at many iris values

Do the best you can with this shot in post

Use a wall fan with a black blade and check rolling shutter

Shoot a resolution chart of some nature

Shoot some soft back lit pretty girls

Shoot somthing like you shoot for your day job.

Shoot these real scenes at many iris values

Do the best you can with them in post.

Give commentry and notation to any public video, including a screen cap of your post and commentry of your post giving motivation.

Dont shoot parks, ducks or skateboarders unless that is your dayjob - certainly not with the sun on your shoulder and an 18mm S35 FOV.

My bucket test in my studio! A spotty highlight, and some deep shadow to evaluate..

ps the way the dedo hits the wll will bring out banding

I also like getting banding in sidelit paper cyclinders (photo bg paper)

BTW to me a camera is 'what will it provide in the grade'
