Sorry! This is my THIRD string of tech support queries trying to get a simple answer! Aaargh!

Hello? Anyone there?
WebTicket 5/14/2011

Toast 9 and 10 also say that they support AVCHD video... and do not properly stitch together spanned subclips. PLEASE send this query to a competent software engineer to answer. Please. This is ridiculous, probably the worst customer support I've ever seen. No response at all would be better than this string of non-answers.

Dear Barry,

Kindly refer the link below for supported file formats of Toast 11:

Note: Toast 11 will support AVCHD file.

Regards,
Kevin

Anyone? Hello?

WebTicket 4/28/2011
I do not own Toast 11. I have purchased many copies of Toast from versions 5 to 10, and am wondering if version 11 will address this issue for me. Can no-one in your organization just answer the question for me? Can noone get an SDHC card with a spanned clip and pop it into a computer running Toast 11? Is noone responsible for testing these features? Most camcorders sold these days are AVCHD... is it not important to you to be able to say "Toast 11 supports the AVCHD file hierarchy"? I'm finding this whole discussion pretty outrageous! Please, find a software developer who worked on this feature and just ask whether the AVCHD file structure/metadata is supported! Argh!

Dear Barry,

Thank you for contacting Roxio Customer Care.

I understand that you need to know whether Toast 11 will properly interpret original AVCHD spanned footage when transcoding it for standard DVD-video production.

Barry, have you updated the software to the latest version. If not kindly update the software to the latest version. Once you launch the software you will be prompted to download the latest updates. Kindly download and install the latest updates and then try transcoding.

Hope this resolves the issue.

If you have any questions regarding the suggestions provided or the issue still persists, please revert by updating this web-ticket and we'll be more than glad to help you further.

Dilon

Again, this fails to address my question. I want to make a standard DVD from AVCHD footage. The footage on the card is a single long clip (say 14GB) spanned across multiple 4GB segments (since the FAT32 file system doesn't allow larger segments). The AVCHD standard has metadata for how these clips should be combined. Other software will properly stitch these together to one uninterrupted clip on the DVD. Toast 10 treated each subclip as a separate track, and playback paused momentarily at the places where the spanned clips were split. That is, it dealt with MTS files, but not the AVCHD file structure and metadata. Has Toast 11 improved on this?

Please don't try to inform me about burning AVCHD discs or archiving AVCHD. I am not asdking about that. I'm asking if Toast will properly interpret original AVCHD spanned footage when transcoding it for standard DVD-video production.

Dear Barry,

'Toast 11 Pro' application has the capability to burn AVCHD files to a blu-ray disc or a standard DVD to play in Blu-ray devices.

If you have purchased 'Toast 11' , you should have 'Toast 11 HD/BD plugin' installed in your computer which will help you to burn and play blu-ray discs.

I would request you to refer the link given below:

This actually sounds like you are answering support questions via bad translation software or keyword-based automatic reply generation that DOESN'T work. Is that the case? If so, better to state that up-front than to look like you've hired incompetent and illiterate human support reps.
WebTicket 4/10/2011

This answer is somewhat incomprehensible, and certainly doesn't give me the answer I need. Please re-answer, I only need a "yes" or "no"!

Dear Barry,

Thank you for contacting Roxio Customer Care.

Does Toast 11 understand the AVCHD file hierarchy, and is it able to stitch together 4GB segments of the same clip properly, or does it only deal with individual MTS files? We're looking for an easy way to dump raw AVCHD footage of long events to DVD, but earlier versions of Toast treated each MTS file as a separate item, and transitions between them were not smooth. Please, has this been remedied?

Yeow! Almost seems like a bot is responding.

Can you find a US # to call? I am thinking that maybe there is a language barrier in play here. I ran into this on another product. I kept telling them to refer the question to the next higher level. Eventually I got someone here in the states that completely understood the question, and gave me the answer I was wanting.

Haven't tried by phone.... sadly, with the twins and a lack of reception in the building where I spend most of my time... and no more commuting!.... I don't even have a chance to make quick calls to friends and family, much less technical support calls! Someday I'll likely have to but a new copy of Toast anyway for, say, a new computer at work, and I'll get my answer then... unless someone from DVXUser can answer. I posted a thread asking if anyone used Toast 11 a while back, but had no positive answers so far...

I have Toast 11. When I get home from work I can try and do this with a spanned clip from a GH2 if that will help.

So just to be clear, you're hoping that multiple 4GB spanned segments will play as one uninterrupted DVD?

Great, thanks! Yes, i'd like to know if each spanned clip on the card is an uninterrupted chapter on the DVD…

Tested this out. Had a 27 minute clip. Reached a 4.29GB MTS file, which then spanned to a 350MB MTS file. Final Cut imports it as a single clip with no dropped frames or interruptions.

Dropped the AVCHD structure on the DVD-Video portion of Toast 11. It sees it as 2 clips instead of one. Burned to a disk image, played back in DVD Player. There is a short stutter between the two "clips," I'm guessing because Toast encodes them as individual Titles, rather than chapters.

So I'm guessing you won't like Toast 11. Sorry for the bad news sir. let me know if you need any more information.

Awel, Thanks! It's nice to finally know! Sadly this is true of many products that "support AVCHD"... they mean the MTS files that are PART of AVCHD, not the AVCHD standard itself...

Doc, I run FCP. I'm waiting to see what the new FCP does, but if it doesn't help, I may add Premiere to the mix just for the ability to quickly dump footage to a DVD... it seems the best option at the moment!

Right, but it still needs transcoding... I'm just looking for a way to dump raw footage to a DVD with as little human interaction as possible, and without needing to clear disc space for the transcoding...

Doc have you tried ClipWrap? The demo version doesn't let me try out the stitching… it also seems to take a while!

Wow, that is some HORRENDOUS technical support. Sounds like that 'Eliza' program from the 90s found a new job! Glad someone here could answer your question! I can tell you this, the people that make ClipWrap are REALLY proficient at responding! :)

Heh heh... Eliza! But that was from the 60's, no? Weizenbaum?

I remember typing in old BASIC versions in the early 80's... they still did better than this support program!

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS, THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE CLIPWRAP?
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT THEY ARE REALLY PROFICIENT AT RESPONDING?
I SEE.
CAN YOU ELUCIDATE?
