Telling apart the Brevis Cinefuse elements

Hey there,

So while I was cleaning up my HVX Brevis Flip rig I cleaned all of the cinefuse elements. I have CF1L, CF2L, and CF3L...they all got mixed up during cleaning and Im not entirely sure how to tell them apart (other than shooting tests with all of them).

Is there any way to tell them apart on sight?

Thanks

Just pulled out one of mine and cannot tell between the two. I bet Dennis could tell, but don't see anything for the untrained eye. Sorry...

I tried doing it by eye last night and had my friend guess as well, and got different answers between the both of us...it kinda drove me mad.

I guess testing is the only way.

I remember Dennis telling me something like... hold the cinefuse element just above a led light (like the power light on the charger) Cinefuse 1 will have the least diffusion.

Hmm...I was holding them up to a kitchen lightbulb....but I did just get my order of rosco litepads, Ill use them as a lightbox and see what I can come up with later.

What do you think of each CF? I'm upgrading to an 'e' and am sick of the grain produced from the cinefuse 3 element. Does cinefuse 2 have any grain? What do you think of CF2?

I've really only been shooting with the CF1L, and decided to start messing around with the others I had...and then ended up mixing them all up with cleaning!

I'm going to test out the car rig I made this weekend, and will likely try out all of the cinefuse elements on it. Hopefully I'll have some decent footage to post.

thanks mate, I'd be very interested. For some reason I can't find Cinefuse comparison anywhere.

Rob, an LED light (small point source) viewed from say 25mm away (under the element) will behave differently. The light will look the smallest when viewed through CF1, larger under CF2, and largest under CF3.

CF1Le should not show grain ever, if used in decent light and at f5.6 and under. You can push f8, but that takes very good light. The aperture range goes down to the point where CF3 should only be used at lenses faster than f2.8.

Dennis is there any chance of some CF comparison footage? There's always a few people not sure what to buy, would be a great link to have on the CF purchase pages (as well as linked to forum). I'm really looking hard at CF2le but don't know where to find any footage (and especially comparison footage).

Ian

Thanks for the clarification dennis.

I love the MP1 upgrade!

If I have the time this weekend when shooting tests Ill try to get some comparison shots with the different elements.

Rob, glad you like the MP.1 update. After NAB I find myself wondering if we should be rendering old units obsolete with the latest greatest whiz bang name/graphics and marketing. Comments like yours help to confirm that making sure there's always an upgrade path is the right thing to do. It's likely not the best marketing path, but we like it when our existing customers get their familiar chassis back with new tricks. Getting one back with a microchip and firmware running the show has to make a few people happy :-) External oscillation adjustment and microchip control certainly take our image quality up another notch again.

On the CF1/2/3 footage question, we're taking this a step further. We're shipping Hubert's (our front end guy) Arri 2C 35mm camera and lens kit over from Holland so we can provide film, vs bare camera, vs CF1, 2 and 3 for you. The Arri 2C camera kit is in no less than 200lbs! This will be a clip featured on the Cinevate Video University series.

The CINEFUSE R&D program is nowhere close to being over, and we've been hinting for some time at some cool stuff in the skunkworks. Shooting on film and getting transfers to compare to adapter footage, using the same cine lens, should give you some confidence in what we've got coming in the "drop in" imaging element department. Some have wondered why we're not interested in the bokeh of a spinning design ...

Dennis,

The one thing that I think sets the Brevis apart from the rest is the ability for it to be upgraded and improved. Especially with the next generation of cameras coming up, I'm happy that the Brevis can quickly evolve unlike the dinosaur M2.

Considering I'll be shooting in the desert this summer, I am so happy I will not have to crack open the Brevis to adjust the motor speed when Im working in different frame rates...that alone is worth the price of the upgrade.

Dennis, should I tape over all the seams of the flip unit to brevis when shooting in the dust? Im not sure how much, or if any can get in there...

Bob, it should be pretty tight, and the Brevis unit has a front/rear shield. In fine dust situations gaff tape won't hurt though.

the "drop in" imaging element department.
Yes! That's what I've been waiting for, that would be the upgrade I'm really after - to simply slide in the CF like it were a filter in a matte box.

And great new on the CF comparisons coming up.

Dennis, you the man.

Did a quicky bokeh test with the elements tonite. The CF3L is beautiful....and strangely with the 28mm Nikkor lens the CF2L showed much more vingetting than either of the two elements.

I'll shoot some further tests this weekend with the car mount I put together and post the results.
