Tell don't show

One of the popular maxims of screenwriting is "show don't tell".
Since we've been talking about "Toaster in Space", it's worth pointing out that TIS breaks this rule. At the end. The protagonist does a lot of explaining. But it works perfectly. Just goes to show, rules are meant to be broken or something like that...

Learn the rules.

Understand them all.

Then throw them away.

That' my take on it.

But too much exposition can be dangerous. Just like junk-food.

Every rule can be broken, but something better needs to be put in its place. If a broken rule works, it's because it replaced that void with something better that makes up for it.

It's critical that you fully understand the rule, and it's reason for existing. Then, and only then, can you successfully break the rule.

Lots of people have learned to fake it. The entertainment industry is built on the dog and pony show.
