Teleconverted Canon 70-200 F4 (2x Canon Converter Mark 1) can't catch focus.

When I'm fully extended on my Canon 70-200 F4 Mark 1, with my Canon 2x Converter, on a Metabones Adapter, I can't catch focus on targets. I know the Mark 1 converter isn't the best, but is this common or should I re-evaluate the Metabones? Or am I just really pushing the envelope on this lens?

This is on an FS5.

Unless the lens is broken or malfunctioning, it's definitely the Canon and or Metabones convertor, that looks like bad VHS as far as sharpness. The Canon 70-200 F4 is really, really sharp, sharper than my 70-200 2.8 IS II even.

My experience with the 70-200 2.8 IS and the Canon 2X adapter was such that I will never buy a Canon adapter, I feel they degrade the image too much. Add in the Metabones and you have yet another variable. My suggestion would be to rent the proper lens for what you are trying to shoot, I would suggest either rent the new https://www.sony.com/electronics/camera-lenses/sel100400gm and eliminate both adapters or at least rent the Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6 IS II and eliminate the Canon adapter, just leaving the Metabones EF to E mount adapter.

I've found consistently with long lenses, you get what you pay for and running two adapters means you're not going to get sharp, good looking images. I'd just rent or buy the Sony and be done with it, it's a really nice lens.

Thanks for the advice Puredrifting, so many variables is definitely a huge drawback in identifying the problem. I've been eyeing the Sigma 150-600 for purchase, I rented it a couple of times and was very happy with the results.

The mark I TC's are not great, by any means, so it's definitely dragging that lens down. Following what PD said, I have the Canon 100-400 v.II and it's an excellent lens. Definetly worth a look if you need a long lens.

Sigma? Meh. Third party lenses, other than the ART series, are not known for their sharpness, build, reliability.

The 100-400 4.5-5.6 IS II the lens I am lusting after, Canon's loaned me a couple of them for some recent shoots and it was painful shipping them back. I'm really happy with all of my Canon lenses but I am missing that 400mm length and this lens is a steal if you ask me, just like the 70-200 2.8 IS II, it punches way above it's cost. I used it on my C200, C300 MKII, 80D for stills and on a borrowed 7D MKII for stills also and that lens is magic for the money.

If I owned an FS5 though, I would also rent the Sony, which is also getting rave reviews in the stills world. Given a choice, I would always opt for native mount versus a Metabones unless I needed the wide angle bump of the Metabones on an M43 imager.
