Teen Texting Driving PSA. Somewhat graphic.

Karl,

I'm not trying to beat you here. I believe in laws, yes. I don't think it's correct to ban cell phones from cars. And I believe accidents - cell phone or not, do occur and still will occur despite a cell ban.

I don't know what else I can say. It's my opinion. And both you, and I, are entitled to ours. I can't see this going any place decent that won't get the thread shut down.

I suppose what I'm trying to get at, is why you feel that it's fine and dandy to continue promoting behavior that gets people needlessly killed.

Can't be a matter of rights; there's no Constitutional protection for a right to operate a cell phone and a car at once.

Can't be a matter of laws-have-zero-effect, because in fact we know that laws do affect behavior.

Can't be because cell-phone use is innocuous, or on par with other done-while-driving activities, because the available research demonstrates that's not true; it's comparable to DUI.

Intelligent people advocating weird, foolish and dangerous policy fascinate me. It's just so strange. Do you equate the value of being able have a cell conversation at one's convenience, with the value of lives lost to the practice...?

Like all laws (gun, booze, whatever) it's not us responsible types that get these laws implemented it's the ones that abuse said substances.

Be very afraid of the next generation of drivers... in my speech class, one kid said that he thinks it's stupid to text while driving, and the whole class laughed at him.

98% of kids at my school text while driving, talk on their phone while driving, and/or drink and drive without any consideration of the consequences.

Solution? No idea...

The solution is that some proportion of them will die doing it - hopefully without taking anyone else with them - and the remainder will eventually grow the f*ck up.

Okay, yeah, most of the remainder will keep on doing the same stoopid crap for the rest of their lives; I was just trying to cheer myself up, there.

If people only killed themselves then letting the Darwin principle work would be totally fine - alas they frequently murder others in the process, and injustice of injustices, they often survive themselves.

And what about the pedestrians they hit!?

No one seems to be thinking about them. It's all about safer cars, and I get the argument for safer cars, we need safer cars because there will always be accidents.

But no matter how safe the car is, it won't protect the pedestrian.

Laws will never fully work... but they HELP. Simple as that. I'd rather have a law in place than no law. To what degree it helps, I don't know, probably not much. BUT if it could prevent even 1 collision/pedestrian death, then it's done it's job.
