Ted & Marry

I don't normally do this...

But since I know I probably won't ever shoot this I thought I'd post it here for a little reading.

It is super short. Only two pages. A 5 min short when taking into account that it is all scene action.

Anywho, if you have an opinion on it type type type away if you want.

Ted & Marry

I don't know where this idea came from... I was working on a wedding.. (ugh) and thought of tango music... then thought of true lies... googled for the tango music they used in the film.. bought it off iTunes... then this idea popped into my brain.. I dunno.. I am odd..

anywho.

peas.

I really like it! A challenging shoot eh?

ya.

I am too poor to fund my own work anymore... and I doubt this is 'Canadian' enough for the Canada arts council...

and so she will stay on the shelf... for now..

Hi Loki,

Good stuff - thanks for sharing. And if you want to add to the irony, have an elderly couple arguing just off the dance floor (Marry's parents) - in time, the matiere de escorts the oldsters from the ballroom for their misconduct - Marry gives them a brief condescending stare and returns her affection to Ted.

Good luck, Michael

It's interesting. You do need a new scene when Marry exits the bedroom and moves into the hall -- INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS.

You might also mention Marry's green eyes early on, so we know for sure that the fantasy woman in the ballroom scene is supposed to be her. In fact, I would have Marry look up from her crouching position, closeup on her green eyes, and transition that to the green eyes of the fantasy woman.

I do wonder -- why do people at a fancy ball wear nametags? Is the woman wearing a nametag too? Is the nametag even necessary? Maybe you could give the teddy bear some identifying feature that would translate to the fantasy man -- a gold vest or a distinctive necktie, or something similar. Might be a tad less cliche.

I find the ending a bit anti-climactic. If it were me, I'd transition back to Marry in the bedroom, only now she's lying on the floor fast asleep clutching the teddy bear as the argument rages from the floor below. But that's just me.

There are other things that could be done to give it a little more punch, maybe. But it's an interesting idea. I can't imagine it would cost very much to produce. You should do it!

This thing is almost intimidating, in the right hands it could really be magical, in the wrong hands it could be a Youtube 5 hitter.

The name tag was ... pure lazyness on my part.

I am sure in a subsequent draft i would have used a less "mallet over the head" approach".

I will add that ending to it I think. Would end it on a bittersweet note. I will change a few other things too.

If I want it to be of the quality I have in my head... this would cost a pretty penny. I could probably shoot this for a couple thousand... but then.. I have an affliction with film now :cheesy:

oh god.. I'd never let something I do sink to that level...

it looks and sounds very lovely in my head at the moment.

It looks and sounds lovely in my head too. But I could do it on $500 here in America. On DV, of course, but still HD. Deferred pay for the cast and crew. Done well, it would be an excellent addition to anyone's demo reel. Good festival piece.

Biggest expense would be the ballroom scene, of course. Bet you could get a good location, though. We got a mansion for a party scene for 'Afterlife' -- for free! Wardrobe for that scene would probably be your priciest item. Still, with a little creative ingenuity, it could be done.

Would love to see it!

One other suggestion -- a change of title. If you get rid of the nametags (which you should, in my opinion) then the audience isn't going to know the name of either character. So 'Ted and Marry' won't mean much to them.

Aww.. but I wouldn't shoot this on an HVX. I'd want to shoot this on Super 16 or 35mm... which means paying for people that know their stuff. A child actor able to actually perform.. will cost... as will decent dancers... a choreographer.. etc etc...

It might get shot down the road... we'll see.. but I'd take the time to do it right... $500 and an HVX wouldn't do it justice.. no matter how many 35mm adaptors you strap onto the front of the camera.

There is an intangible feeling of shooting on film that elevates your projects legitimacy...even if it is only on a superficial level.. I dunno.. I am probably just bias now..

but if I were to shoot this digital it wouldn't be on a prosumer camera.. it would be a real HD camera.

bah I am ranting now.. it is late.. i am going to bed.

night.

I wasn't talking about an HVX -- I was talking about a Panasonic Varicam. But your point is well taken -- film would be more beautiful, in this case.

Hope you get to do it one day!

In reality, done properly, you could shoot this with an HXV and it could win an Oscar in theory--but yeah, I saw a guy shooting with an old 16mm Bolex the other day and was so damn jealous! Cinealtas, Varicams, they just don't light my fuse the way anything with film does.

I got an old Super-8 camera. Does that do anything for ya?
