This is sweet. I am on my way to North Carolina on my laptop on DVXuser and I am driving. WTF you ask. Let me explain.

My laptop is connected via bluetooth to my phone which is in turn connected to the internet. Now even cooler. My girlfriend and brother are with me with thier laptops on the internet too. I shared my internet connection on my laptop via WLAN 802.11b to the rest of the laptops...hmm...technology is good :)

Re: Technology is cool!

Well besides me being in NC  ;D... (And I know, 30+ years of Senator Jesse-dumb-ass-Helms didn’t help the NC rep at all :-/)

Wilmington NC has a MASSIVE film scene (you’ve never heard of the Wilmington film scene? Some people call it Holly2 or Wilmingwood, Steven Kings “favorite place to shoot”, etc)

Screen Gems Studios, the largest film studio east of Hollywood.

"Wilmington NC ranks third as the most popular film location in North America, surpassed only by Los Angeles and Toronto"
http://www.moviemaker.com/issues/23/23_carolina.html

(movies/shows shot here, full or partial and this is an EXTREMELY partial list, there's ALWAYS something in production there)
"The Crow", "Cats Eye", "Domestic Disturbance", "Forest Gump", "Hannibal", "Jackal", "Manhunter", "Maximum Overdrive", "The Fugitive", "The Exercist III", "Re-animator", "Blue Velvet", "The Hudsucker Proxy", "Dawson's Creek", "A Walk to Remember", "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood"

Several Hollywood types own homes and/or businusess there. (Partial list: Dennis Hopper, Tom Cruise, Tom Berenger)

(Another partial list)  Keanu Reeves, Steve Buscemi, Vince Vaughn, Steven King, John Travolta have been spotted “hanging out” and local places during filming.

Fort Bragg (Army special forces HQ)
Camp Lejeune
Fort Bragg
MCAS Cherry Point
Pope AFB
Seymour Johnson AFB

(Military bases = outstanding diversity with people and cultures from all over the US and the world, excellent communities have built up around these bases)

East Carolina University (When Playboy magazine used to do the “Top 10 Party Schools” in the country, ECU won so many years straight, 5 I think, that Playboy finally printed “Sorry ECU, we no longer rank professionals”)

Duke Medical Center and University

Great Smoky Mountains National Park
The Blue Ridge Mountain Region
Linville Caverns
Cherokee Reservation Folk Art Center
Morrow Mountain State Park
Queen's Cup Steeplechase at Brooklandwood
Pinehurst (Internationally renowned golf facilities, US open 1999,2005)
Kitty Hawk
Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Research Triangle Park (Nortel Networks, Cisco Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, home of Red Hat Linux, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences etc, etc)

The music scene sucks here though  :(

Re: Technology is cool!

We have a house in Lake Toxaway. It is a country club that resides in the smokies, its gorgeous. The CEO of Coca Cola has a house a couple places away. AC DC's drummer has a house down in the valley.

We have a boat so we hit the water in tubes. Rock climbing and backpacking is good. We have a sweet ass telescope and the stars are insane....There is a lot to do....

Re: Technology is cool!

Steve Buscemi got stabbed in the neck at Firebelly Lounge in downtown Wilmington....

Re: Technology is cool!

I did hear about Wilmington, i heard producers buy off a lot of property for film shoots. I am stuck in Fayetteville so i have not seen the sun yet. Maybe will ride over to Wilmington some time. I am looking forward to the NCSA though, heard they have a fine film program there. Though i was very disappointed that they do not shoot 35mm. Have a feeling they are a bit outdated hmm...
Technology is very cool.

Re: Technology is cool!

dude, if i didnt already live in San Diego, then i would want to live in Wilmington, easily.

besides all the film work that goes on there, i just love the vibe. NC has some beautiful places out there.

ps. NC puts out a lot of good bands, but it just depends on what kind of music you are into. lots of good post-hardcore stuff coming out of there. (ie. HopesFall)

Re: Technology is cool!

Yeah XDeathOrGloryX, I was in Sex, Love And Money (S.L.A.M., ever hear of us? probably not  ;D). We got a deal with Sony Music back in 95. Lots of fun, lots of bs though, long story. Godsmack is "technically" from here, I remember the lead singer playing in a bunch of wierd bands around. The "scene" however comes and goes (like everywhere else) and right now it's in a slump around here imo. (the singer in the band I'm in now just moved from San Diego, you ever heard of Stigmata, 13A or Asphalt Ballet? He sang for those guys out there)

There is a pretty decent punk scene. (but punk thrives underground anyway so there's no need for a scene to support it)

TylerGred, yeah I left that part out, I was all "Wilmington is cool" and then the bar fight was a downer. Vince is a notorious sh*t talker and a 'mean' drunk and Steve got caught up in it from what I understood. He basically caught Vince's knife caused by Vince's mouth. That's the local version of the story however and I wasn't there of course so it may have been something else altogether.

Re: Technology is cool!

I'm not saying anything bad about the town (I live here), I just think it's funny. I had a friend that was in the bar that night and you are correct, Vince started it all. He said that when the fight broke out another guy got stabbed besides Steve and pepper spray was flying which hit Vince in the face. When the medics got to the bar they went and checked out Vince before the other guy, who was stabbed. I still think it's a pretty funny story...

Re: Technology is cool!

Hey Kyle, just curious what type of phone are you using and what carrier. I do exactly the same thing when I'm on the road. It is cool.

Re: Technology is cool!

ok guys, let me know how this is done. i'd like to surf the web while on the road.

Re: Technology is cool!

I use AT&T as my carrier. I have one of the newer Edge phones which has higher data throughput. (~200 kb/s in good signal). If you go that route make sure the phone does 4+1 Edge. The phone will come setup already. Just install the pc software that should come with it as well and your set. Better off getting a call plan with large data throuput allowance.

Re: Technology is cool!

oh yeah, for the connection to the phone you can use a cable which you may have to purchase separetely, IR, or bluetooth. I only use a cable or bluetooth, or course the phone and computer must support it. For cable op via serial port some computer serial ports can't support the speed required, some do. Make sure under dial up networking for your connection go to modem setup and set the baud rate for at least 460k Baud. That way you'll get the max throughput.
