You have to cut the onion in front of their face. Doing so breaks cells which interact with enzymes which makes amino acid sulfoxides which form sulfenic acids, which then become a volatile gas that interacts with your tears.

Add a couple of drops of Visine to your eyes and make sure it hits the eye! You will definitely tear up! I use it a lot because of my allergies and it looks like I just got done balling when I use those drops!

Yeah, and if that doesn't work rub the onion on there eyes. Or a lemon. Yeah that ought to do it. :'(
