Team America a rip-off from this show?

Re: Team America a rip-off from this show?

I wouldn't say rip off. The Thunderbird look was completely deliberate from my understanding.

it used a similer style. but isnt ripping it off. team america is a spoof. thunderbirds was a serious spy show from the uk.

I used to think it was pretty serious, even with all the strings :D

Ok, I agree that "rip off" is a bit strong. But, it would be nice if there was some attribution to the original source. The look of the marionettes in TA look like they were taken right out of Thunderbirds.

What if they had produced an animated version and copied the look and feel of South Park? Wouldn't that be looking for trouble?

Just wondering. I'm not familiar with the intricacies of copyright law, etc..

;D
You do realize that the filmakers are also the makers of southpark right? I don't think the movie need to pay homage to the Thunderbirds. that was the first thing I thought of when I saw the preview to this movie. It is so much a spoof of the Thunderbirds from the look, feel, the acting, and even the theme of the movie that saying that it was spoofing the thunderbirds would just be overkill.

Re: Team America a rip-off from this show?

Quote from interview:

Trey Parker On 'Team America: World Police'

"Parker says he and partner Matt Stone initially thought that their idea was being made by someone else. "We called our agents, and we were like, 'We want to do Thunderbirds,'" Parker said. "They were like, 'Sorry, guys, someone's already doing it.' For like a day, we were super bummed out, because we were like, 'Someone's doing a puppet movie, and that's genius.' It wasn't until the next day we found out that they were doing it live-action." ...

Yeah, they definitely got the idea to do a puppet movie from Thunderbirds, but that's where the similarities end.

I disagree. If you compare the overall look and feel they are similar. For example, compare the designs of the puppets; facial structure, hair, eyes, etc.. and they look very close.

And, (thanks to Dakota) the article linked above contains the quote "Trey Parker says that his satirical puppet movie Team America: World Police was inspired from watching reruns of Thunderbirds on television".

So, all is cool since the SP boys cite their inspiration. :)
