Teaching Rates...

A business owner wants me to teach him Sony Vegas. What would be a good hourly rate to charge? I dont feel comfortable charging my editing rate, as it does not involve the "creativity" of editing. Or am I looking at this the wrong way?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

To me it depends. Does he want you to teach him on your computer? Is this during normal business hours for you? If you could be editing when you are teaching him I would charge him the editing rate. Our rule is that if it occupies an edit bay it gets rated as editing time. Now if its an overnight render, thats different but you get my point. Now if its an on the weekend go over to his office type of thing for a few hours a few weeks in a row - I'd say 30-50 an hour.

I charge my regular hourly rate.
Yes, it's much easier work with no deadline to make but you are creating your own canibalization... or can be. They are benefitting by learning from an editor, not a teacher. There is no need to do it cheaper than when you edit.

I teach computer applications as my 'day job.' One-on-one training typically runs about $75 per hour 4 hour minimum, classroom training at the clients site using their facility (their computers and such) for basic applications (Word, Excel, etc) for up to 8-10 students would be in the order of $500 per day plus books and expenses. Certified technical training can be on the order of $750 - $1000 per day for a class of 8 to 12.

i have recently found a guy who wants me to teach him sony vegas as he just moved to it for hd editing. For 4 hours, hes willing to pay $100
. Not bad but I dont think itll take that long to teach vegas when he was efficient at his previous editing program. hmmm
