TC Helicon Voice Pro ?

Just wondering if anyone out there has used a TC Helicon Voice Pro vocal processor and could share any comments about it? It is currently TC's flagship vocal processing unit from which the Voice Works, Voice Works Plus, and Voice Live were derived.

According to the reviews that were done in Mix, Audio Media, and Resolution, they claim it is quite realistic sounding in pitch shifting, harmonies, breath, growl, character changes, gender bending, etc.

Anyone got an ears on perspective? :dankk2:

I used the Voice Prism which is I think the cheaper version. It was pretty good but it's made for creating harmonies and it was tricky to just change the main voice. Actually it couldn't change the main voice, you had to mix 100 with one of the harmony voices and then turn off all the other voices. Kind of a pain for what we wanted to do which was to alter a voice. But it sounded pretty good when we got it working.

Noiz2,

Thanks for the reply! My research so far tells me that the TC Voice Prism was one of their earlier units, but I'm glad to hear that it did OK in the end for you.

The Voice Pro allows for direct alteration of pitch, formants, gender, character, etc, in addition to providing up to 4 harmonies. The original incoming vocal (they call it the dry lead) is kept intact but is multed to generate a separate "virtual lead " which is the directly effected lead.

The "dry lead" can be mixed with the virtual lead but doesn't have to be. Up to 4 harmonies can be created in addition if desired. Each of the harmonies can also be separately effected with character, gender, pitch, formants, etc so a varied backup "group" can be emulated.

I had one for a few months and was impressed with all the different effects aimed squarely at vox. The Gregorian Chant was especially fun to play with.

Its a quality effects unit. The harmony layerings were very cool too. I miss that box and if you are looking for a strong vocal effects unit and can afford the price, get it. It blows the doors off the Digitech and the other low end units.

Also, I had the Voice Pro Live, same unit in a live performance friendly switching interface.

lazerusnvc,

Thanks for the reply. That's the sort of info I was looking for. I didn't want to put out the bux without confirmation that it was indeed sonically better quality.

TC Electronic products are very rad/cool, their "live/performance" product offering is ok, but I would not use it for any post/outboard box type effects, nor would I inline it prior to recording something.
Only for live performance.

So it would really depend on what application would you be using this in.

For pitch shifting and others Antares and Waves Tune is also available as plug-in. I know Izotopes latest offering of new software is also very very useful for time remap and others.

So if you let me know where in the signal chain this box would go, I could offer more advice.

Currently I'm using TC-Powercore with DSP plug-in based versions of some of the fx that are algorithmically identical to whats in that box. The harmony plug-ins were never that impressive for my tastes. Theirs is possibly one of the better ones, once again Waves Vocal and Antares are also worth a look.

DJ,

The only product that I'm interested in is the Voice Pro from which some or all of the other TC Helicon products were spun off from. I have no interest in using the "live" product at all.

According to the TC H people I have spoken to, they claim the sonic quality of the Voice pro far exceeds their other products.

As far where in the chain it would go, it would be used only after the dry vocals were recorded, so I could audition what, if any, effects I wanted to apply. All use would be in post.

If this is strictly for post, I wouldn't buy this and look at software based processing plugins such as those that DJ mentioned. Keep in mind I really believe this thing is meant for singing not for general post processing of voice wavs. But thats my own opinion.

Lastly, I didn't suggest buying the Live unit folks, I only said thats what I had in my studio and what I had experience with. Kapeesh? :)
