'Taxi Driver' sequel discussed
Wednesday, January 19 2005, 17:00 GMT -- by Daniel Saney

Director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro have discussed the possibility of reuniting for a sequel to their classic 1976 collaboration Taxi Driver.

Taxi Driver told the story of disillusioned Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (De Niro) who turns vigilante and falls in love with a teenage prostitute (Jodie Foster).

MRIB reports the acclaimed director and award-winning actor are 'in talks' to make a sequel. De Niro explained: "I was talking with Martin Scorsese about doing what I guess you'd call a sequel to Taxi Driver, where Travis Bickle is older."

Travis becomes a Senator?

Or found religion and is now a minister...who goes out at night and...

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

Why re-hash old classics? Leave them in the past, they're fine where they are.

Not to mention you can only make so many movies in your lifetime... Why waste time doing a re-hash. :P Especially the time of a great director. (McG can make all the crap he wants.)

NOOOOO!!!
WHYYYYY?

Martin Scorsese is doing everything possible to destroy his reputation.

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

Sad but true. I'll take edgy Scorsese over pandering to get an oscar Scorses any day of the week.

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

Well, maybe it will be edgy. Maybe Travis had a sex change and then became a nun. While being a nun he falls in love with another nun (played by Jodie Foster). He is conflicted because he doesn't know if he's a lesbian (which would be contrary to his vows) or if he's still a man inside, lusting for the nun like prostitute of his past. Either way he can't go on with the charade, so in his frustration he gets a mail order sling shot, and starts taking the penguins out one by one. Most of them don't die, they just get annoyed (Being a new nun, Sister Mary Travis doesn't really understand how impervious they are to the weapons of the worldly) So they kick him/her out of the convent where he lives happily ever after as a pharmaceutical salesman.

I think it has potential.

My 3 Thoughts on Scorsese...

1) Martin Scorsese should get an Oscar before he dies.

2) Martin Scorsese has done some incredible work.

3) Martin Scorsese has done some unbelievable junk.

I would like to see more 1 & 2 before it's too late.

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

I've been watching this with fiery eyes. I don't think one should completely rule out the fact that this movie could have potential.

As many of you know, I love Taxi Driver, moreso than my carebear (which resides in my closet, under the weedwhacker). I think that if this isn't sold off as a 'sequel' to taxi driver, but more in terms of a continuation, it would be a little bit more plausible.

I personally am interested in seeing what happens to Travis, after the whole ordeal. What I always imagined happening, was him continuing to work as a cab driver, because I felt that was his character, a very mellow, routine oriented fellow.

However, this movie could ruin that, because some of the exhileration of Taxi Driver was wondering about what would happen to Travis throughout the end credits, as he cruises the red light district in his cab.

I am dubious, but I haven't ruled it out yet, as when one gives it serious thought, you may be able to determine that it is a somewhat plausible idea. Hell, if whitechicks scored 70 million, I'm sure this would be a sellable, and potentially good idea.

My 25 cents, go buy yourself a Twix

You obviously have not bought a Twix lately. :)

And, I just checked out the soundtrack to Taxi Driver and the movie at the library tonight. Have not started on the movie yet, but will in a few minutes. The soundtrack is pretty good so far. Its in my car. Sweet irony.

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

It might be a good movie, and it's always nice to have hope.  But for the life of me, I can't think of one lets-catch-up-with-the-main-character-20 years-later sequel that was any good. (Texasville anyone?)

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

One thing you can be optimistic about. Scorsese is gonna direct and DeNiro is gonna star. DeNiro has enough clout as an actor to make changes to a script if he wanted to. I don't think either of them would get anywhere near production unless they had a script that both agreed was great, and that Taxi Driver's legions of fans would all enjoy.

At least it's not like some rookie director trying to tell his version of the story and ruins it all together (like they do with so so many sequels).

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

Which is why I brought up Texasville. Bogdonavich, Bridges and Shepard all returned to revive their positions from the Last Picture Show. It was still a disaster.

Re: Taxi Driver sequel

I am surprised how much dialogue the soundtrack edited out of Deniro's monologue. Very cool track on the cd, nonetheless.
