Tax Return Time

Holy crap; $10,400. Dude. Whoa. Think of the film stuff I can get. :cheesy:

Just think if you had done your return earlier you could be spending that money next week at N.A.B.!!!!

34k would not go far in a household down here in OZ. Though there are many who would be glad to have it. A senior Trades Person should be on 70k. A Gr.2 Clerical Assistant about 38k (that's in a 6 Grade ladder) A new Ford Falcon basic 6cyl. 38k + state taxes & dealer charges. That doesn't mention the Federal excise that's already lumped on it. The only country to pay as much tax as we do is Iceland.

Alas Sirius

It goes into savings for our relocation plans; sigh........ I'll still get some tapes and stuff though.

John... no, you got it all wrong. $10,400? That's HVX territory! Get the HVX, make the next "28 Days Later", sell it for $50 million bux, and then the relocation's paid for!

C'mon, everything happens for a reason... isn't it awfully CONVENIENT that you're getting $10,000 from the government, at the same time the HVX is coming out?

The handwriting's all over that wall, my friend!

:)

Hudson,

Did I hear you are relocating? Someone said you were coming to the East Coast (North Carolina)? WORD!! We'll have to grab a beer sometime if that's true. But you're buying *money bags*!! :)

It doesn't go far here either. I'm quite sure we are well below the median income for a family of four.

Whenever people complain about taxes, I always think of the "free" stuff people want, like free healthcare. People don't understand that nothing is free. Somebody is paying for it, it's just a question of how. Shipping isn't free, samples aren't free, trial periods aren't free; those expenses are just built into the price of the product. It's the same with taxes. Defense isn't free, Public Schools aren't free, Public Saety isn't free. We PAY for those things. That's what taxes are for. Some people think that if the government foots the bill, it's free. It ain't.

Even freedom isn't free... I know everybody complains alot about taxes, but at least you get something for it, like roads, fire fighters, schools, etc. My biggest ***** is insurance! I was thinking about it recently. We are self employed, and between health insurance (almost 9 grand a year), car insurance, life insurance, home owners insurance, disability insurance, etc, we are spending over 50% of our income on insurance!! If I wasn't paying so fricking much on insurance, I might actually be able to afford something to insure.

It's the same thing my wife said when I kept getting one filmmaking accessory after the other: "When are you going to actually start making films?" I am not ready for the HVX. But damn that wouldnt be the dream, huh?

I'm digging it; I believe in taxes and organized government. But I stress the level at which we are taxed and the virtually wanton autonomy of insurance companies it's mkaing it hard for people to even live; for other than providing and supporting the government. I just want the **** scaled back; lower and cut taxes (another conversation) even it means cutting the governments control and role in place and don't get me started with Insurance companies; I too spent close to $9000.00 last year just in Health Insurance alone.

I just want it cut back; I feel sorry for the younger 'Gene's to come and I feel sorry for single parents.

North Kac-a-lac:

It's what alot people call North Carolina for some reason. Not sure why. I was actually born in Texas...but have lived in Texas, California, and now North Carolina. I live 45 minutes outside of Charlotte.

Were are you moving too? If you're anywhere close to here, we'll have to grab a beer definately....!!

....And even if you're not....I'll drive however long it takes to get some *learning*. It would be pretty cool to have an NC collaboration of some sort.

Come one to Canada, my friend! We are a land of tax on tax on tax, but the healthcare is 'free'! So you don't have to pay insurance to get an MRI (well you might die while waiting for it).

Ohhh... this would sooooo take me down on a 'political post' path, I am cutting myself off right here.

Back to taxes: I think taxes are important, and frankly, I think some things are undertaxed (cigarettes, gas). Well, others are overtaxed (red wine!).

I also think that the biggest problem is not necessarily the level of taxation, but the bureaucratic nightmare that means hordes of people need to be employed by both the governments (IRS in USA, CCRA in Canada), and by the population (Accountants, tax lawyers, tax preparers), which just makes the whole system riddled with huge inefficiency, preventing us to spend the taxes (and the fees we pay those tax professionals) on something more useful - roads, schools, DVXs, that sort of stuff.

The other thing that really bothers me (as a small bus. owner) is that job creation is taxed (income tax + unemployment 'insurance' + pension plan deductions + employee health tax + ...) more than individual consumption. I'd prefer a high consumption tax (maybe 30% of sales price) and no income tax at all. Some people would argue that would bring an economic downturn, but I think that with more disposable income, peple wouldn't necessarily buy less, they would be more selective in what they buy. It would also permit to link, through taxation, certain classes of goods to financing corresponding public projects, in a similar way that gasoline taxes are used to finance road building and maintenance. But I am probably going far off into the realm of 'what's possible, not necessarily probable'.

Yes; it is way too long; My wife and I are ready. Alas, we must do this with dilligence.

Man I hear you. I think our government is one big clusterfuck of an entity. I love the country, believe in what we stand for; but damn if it needs fixing as its been going on too long without a bitchslap to uncle sam. Too much power; too much say; too much control; too much talk; too much tax; too many agendas that do not concern the people.

Aint it the truth

I'd prefer a national sales tax to income tax. It isn't a perfect idea, but it would increase people's savings, which would in turn create a more stable economy. Besides, I view tax as a necessary evil, if not outright punishment in many cases. I'd rather be penalized for spending too much, than working harder and making too much.

I'm all for taxes - seeing as how they pay for our roads, police, fire, and such. I just think that it is a screwed up system. The lastest "factoid" that I've heard is that if you make under 50k a year you are TWICE as likely to be audited by the IRS then if you make more then that!

The way I figure EVERYONE should pay the absolute minimum tax they can pay. If the government will give you back $50 for only having one arm, then take it. (And what's the deal with that? I think only having one arm is worth a lot more then $50. I can't imagine having to try and use my DVX with only one hand!)

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The tea party starts when we all stop paying our taxes. I'm married with kids so I come out ahead every year, but remember getting reamed as a single guy about town. That sucked ass. Not to incite a revolution against the government, but there are many who believe that federal taxes are unconstitutional. Doesn't mean you wouldn't pay the same amount to your state of residence, who would in turn forward that money to the fed for "protection" from threats foreign and domestic. That is closer to the original vision.

Anyway, just stop paying taxes. If everyone does, then the government collapses and you have your revolution. Now, what do you do with it? That is the more difficult proposition.

I'm all for that! Let the people keep their cash and decide what to do with it. I think they'd be surprised at the amounts that would still be spent. Not everyone is thrifty in america... Probably find the governmental income rising.

Hudson-
My wife is originally from North Carolina, and always talks about wanting to move to Wilmington. NC is a beautiful state! What reason are you moving? Expanding Acuhire with an east coast office? :)
