I just got tascom dr100 recorder. There is little red light that go on if level too high. Should I record so that level never go on? Or its okay to go on like just once every 30 second? Or red light always bad bad bad?

Red is bad.

Seriously, Use your meters. Keep your average around -20 and your peaks around -12.

What are you driving this with?

Back in ancient times when dinosaurs roamed the earth and sound was recorded to analog media, you could get away with recording a little in the red, and for some things it was preferred. With digital recording, if you hit 0db, you've gone too far.

Since you don't have a mixer in front of the DR-100, I would strongly encourage you to engage the limiter on the DR-100. FYI, when using a mixer and feeding the line in on the DR-100, the limiter is automatically engaged and non-defeatable.

I'm using octova 12 mic.

Thank you for link. Manuel says limiter is AGC. I always thought its bad to use. But okay in tascom? So if you engage limiter you won't need to touch manual dials for level? The manuel won't say.

The DR-100 offers both AGC and limiter. You select which. You want to configure it to use the limiter (LMT). Page 42 of the manual describes how to set these functions.

And you will still need to monitor and ride the levels. The limiters HELP prevent you from overloading the gain stages downstream as well as HELP prevent clipping at the A/D converters. A limiter helps the sound person, but does not replace the need for constant monitoring and level adjustments.
