Tascam timecode settings: DF or ND?

Hello all,

I am recording externally for our shoot friday with a tascam hd-p2 and an audio technica AT4073a shotgun mic . We are shooting with an HVX200 at a 29.97 frame rate.

So here's my question: In the tascam frame rate settings, there's an option for 29.97DF and 29.97ND. I read what they mean in the manual but I still dont really get what dropped frames/ non-drop encoded frames mean. Which one should I choose and why?

I am also the editor for this project. Should I be good to go when trying to match up the audio with the video in premiere (assuming we slate everything)? Just wondering if anyone has any general advice/experience on doing this.

Thanks!!

Without getting into the details of what DF and ND. really mean, I've recorded every project (more than 40 and growing) and every one was recorded ND. But, seeing as how you're the editor, you can really decide which way to go, just make sure that whichever way you go, everyone knows so everything stays in sync.

The general rule in a timecode workflow would be to set the audio recorder to match what the camera is running - simple as that. But that presumes that the camera and audio are jammed to each other or exchanging code during record. Without TC input/output terminals on the camera, there is no way for code on the video and code on the audio ever to actually match at the frame level anyway so it just doesn't matter what your settings are. (The Tascam doesn't have a TC generator, it only acts as a reader, so it can't generate TC on its own.)
