Tascam HD P2 vs MarantzPDM 671

Matt,

The HD looked like it had better naming and such, the 671 really doesn't have any. But it does have presets, three anyway, and you can set just about every parameter up in the preset. So that sounds a lot like the projects on the HD, except of course on the 671 they are preset 1,2,3 and thr HD lets you name them... Big Plus.
The battery thing your talking about must be because your using external power. I get a tone in the headphones when it's about three minutes from shut down, and when I tested it it was more like 7 minutes. Also I did a shut down test because I have gotten burned with the Mini Disk shutting down and loosing files. So I put the 671 in record and ran it till the batteries went out and the unit shut down. I didn't loose any files. It closed the file and shut down. But again I was on internal power. I would be sort of surprised if the HD did better with external power. THe DAP1 got very trashy when the external power got too low. No warnings just increasing distortion. "Pro" recorders like SD probably properly monitor external power because they know their users are likely to use it but the lower end stuff tends to make other assumptions, like the feet on the HD, but??

Firewire VS USB. I'm a firewire kinda guy so I'm with you on this but I will point out that the 671 is USB2, which has a faster transfer rate than FireWire 400 - providing your going into a USB2 port on the other end. I have a Firewire CF reader so it doesn't make much difference to me. In the field I have this very cool CF card back up that you stick the card in, press a button and it gets copied to an internal HD very quickly. When we went to Portugal I brought it along and we backed up both cameras and the 671. Worked like a charm and the batteries last forever, well a LONG time. After two weeks on the road and ~30 gigs of transfers the batt was down about 10%.

Finaly the 671 does stamp time of day on the files. But for some strange reason it's stamped in the modified field??? I have a utility that can copy the modified to the creation so... Another instance where you can sort of do the same thing with the 671 but the HD has a better implementation. There are also three custom fields you can set that get put in the metadata of the BWAV file, but I have yet to see any app read them, even Soundminer doesn't seem to see them. But in theory you can put some info there.

I never though the 671 felt plasticy, but I liked the feel of the HD. THe up side to the hump on the top is that you get a bigger display and it's more visible when it's not "in the bag". Of course the down side is the hump on the top...

Let us know how it works out.

Matt,

One thing to be careful with - and I don't like this feature on the HD-P2 - if you format the card, it wipes out all of the project settings. You have to start over. Just go in and delete the files instead.
