Tascam HD-P2 timecode issues...

Search the forums for this, but didn't come across anyone else with this issue.

When I set the timecode for my Tascam hd-p2 to 30 fps it seems to output to final cut as a 24fps file, totally throwing off the sync. I'm trying to use this with a Canon Mark II and have not been able to figure it out. Has anyone else come across this issue?

Any and all help very much appreciated.

Well a couple of things. First you should not be using 30fps, that won't sync with anything. Second files (like the Tascam records) are only stamped with the start time in a given TC. Since the 5D doesn't generate TC your not going to be able to sync by TC anyway. If your sync is drifting then you have a sample rate issue not a TC issue. Sound is recorded in samples not frames, TC in digital audio is only for the benefit of others, it has nothing to do with your sample rate.

However if your using FCP AND your working in a true 24 FPS time line AND your capture settings don't match your sequence settings. Then there is a bug that may be stamping your files with the wrong sample rate.

BTW the one place that 30fps TC is used in film is in transitioning film (24 fps) to video (29.97 fps). 24 goes to 30 with the 3:2 pulldown and then is slowed to 29.97.

So it makes sense that if you put an "illegal" (for video) TC like 30 on the file that FCP would assume it was 24fps "really". But those are both a film speed so you still wouldn't have a sync issue
