Tascam HD-P2 Problem

When I record audio onto the Tascam, it is so quiet that I can barely hear the actors. I am using either an Oktava, or my Heil PR-40 mic, with Monster Cable's top of the line XLR cable. I have the gain all the way to ten, and still I get hardly any sound. When I go straight to my DVX, I have incredible sound, and I only have the gain on around 5 or so? My understanding of the field recorder was that it was superior than going through the camera for audio. Perhaps their is a problem with the unit? Has anyone else had a similar issue, and how was it resolved?

First thing check to make sure the switches on the top are set right. Make sure the -20dB pad is turned off.
