Tascam dr60 marc 1 question about stereo recording

It's okay to use xlr jacks 1 and 2 for recoding stereo with dr60 ? Manual says you have to use 3-4 mini jack. I have mic cable with two xlr plug. Okay to use it for stereo?

Your mic cable with two XLR plugs -- I assume both are on one end of the cable. What is on the other end? A single XLR plug? If so, then you're not going to get actual 'stereo' regardless. You will only get two mono tracks at best. If, on the other hand, the connector at the other end is made to connect to a stereo microphone or other suitable stereo source, then from what I've read in the online manual, it seems that you may be able to record stereo this way.

I know that recording stereo is more than simply using two mics. To get true stereo requires the mics be positioned in a specific pattern. I'm sure there are other requirements as well. But if you do have a stereo mic (or other audio source) and your cable is capable of taking a stereo signal and splitting it to the two XLRs, then I see no reason why you couldn't record stereo, as long as the proper XLR is plugged into the proper jack (Left/Right).

But I'm not an expert.

Hello thank you. Mic is Audio technica 8022 xy stereo mic. I have a cable with two xlr plugs on one side for recorder and one plug on other end with many pins for stereo mic. Tacsam manuel says use mini 1/8" jack for stereo. But I want xlr in.

Yes - YOU have it right.
That IS what you want to do. Exactly.

The Tascam manual probably says that because stereo mics like the one you have are NOT common. Mostly when people want to record a signal that they call "stereo" it is not a pro stereo mic like you have, it is usually a "stereo" signal like the output of a mixing board at a theater or church, or a portable mixer the location-sound person is using to mix many different mics. THESE ARE ALMOST ALWAYS LINE LEVEL SIGNALS which means much hotter than a microphone signal so you DON'T use the XLR microphone inputs.

Just remember that when you plug the 2 XLR cables from the Audio technica 8022 into channels 1 and 2 - set both channels to the same gain range in the menu and the same volume with the knobs.

Good to go!

On page 27 of the manual it shows that the Tascam can be set to stereo recording mode from your choice of either inputs 1-2 (the two XLRs) or 3-4 (the 1/8" mini input). Page 50 of the manual also details how to record in stereo using inputs 1-2.

A stereo mic plugged into the two XLR jacks, with the Tascam set to stereo recording mode using inputs 1-2, will record a stereo track. Just make sure you connect the correct XLR to the proper input (left and right).
