Tascam DR40 dead... probably

Hello,

i have only bought the DR40 over a year ago and right now it seems dead. For the last few days the menu has been frozen. It wouldn't turn off unless I pull the batteries. At first I thought it was a low battery issue. Now I have installed new batteries and the damn thing won't even turn on any more. I just wanted to confirm that it is dead before I waste another 200 for a new device that I didn't like to begin with.

Thanks

I assume you know turning the DR40 off requires holding the power button down for a few seconds. If that's not the case, contact Tascam.

Don't know what you don't like a bout it but it's a great machine for the money.. The preamps suck but not as bad as the Zoom's and others in that that price range

Yes compared to competition I think this is actually the biggest bang for the money... perhaps it's because I'm spoiled in this iPad generation, the menu on these things sucks. For a non-audio guy like me who don't use the device too often, every time I turn it on I'm like 'so how do I use this thing again?', 'Why is the font so big in this tiny little black on yellow LCD screen?' 'I'm pressing up and down so I should be navigating my options up and down accordingly but I'm not sure because it doesn't seem like anything is moving on the screen'

I don't like how you turn it on and off either, but I guess it is the safest way for users who tug their unit into belt straps or something.

There has been times when I know I'm picking up the feed from the soundboard, I see the signals but I don't hear anything on my headphones... I must've muted something but I'm still not sure what. What did I press and why is that function even there??

Why are there separate sections called 'menu' and a 'record mode'? Shouldn't they be under the same section of controls?

And it seems like everything is so quiet even after I crank the 'Input Level'.. the signals seem to go pretty high.

Why is it so frustrating to even open and close the batteries compartment? Shouldn't the screw plate NOT partially cover the batteries cover? Shouldn't there be some added space between the bottom screw plate and the surface of the unit to prevent the bottom screw plate from accidentally being screwed so hard against the surface that it becomes outright difficult to unscrew it since it is so thin? (I don't know how that happened but it did)

Are there any practical use of the USB output? Do people actually give live feeds using this thing? Can this thing even do it?

Even the SD card compartment is difficult to open.

I also wish that there is some kind of padding between the mics and the unit to prevent friction on the unit from being picked up... perhaps this is too much to ask for but since I have bitched for this long.....
