Hi everybody. I bought tascam dr40 couple weeks ago and today i wanted to try record with line in. I used 3.5mm jack on one side and 1/4 on the other side in tascam. I picket up mono, ext in 1 and i played song from computer. Input on the side of device is setup into line position. Can somebody tell me if something is wrong with my device or i do something wrong. here is a sample:

. The Tascam DR-40 wants to see a +4dB (nominal) signal and may be better utilized with a mixer, preamp or other.. as the line mode input level is semi-fixed and only adjustable to around plus or minus 6dB from unity.
The left side-panel "EX IN" switch needs to be set to "Line" and the 'Rec Mode' (front panel button) 'Source' must be set to "EXT IN 1/2".

Thanks for reply. So does it mean i did something wrong i mean set it up wrong? I used to use zoom h2 and i never had a problem with it. I did exactly the same way with tascam i thought that it should work. I know tascam is more advance but there was no way to record on it at least half quality as i did at my zoom. So any suggestions how should i set it up? I am worrying when i get to the reception that i will have to plug in exactly the same way that I do now and then i will be screwed.

As I stated, "The Tascam DR-40's line level mode wants to see a +4dB (nominal) signal", Feeding it -10dB (typically from an RCA or 1/8") would exhibit a low input and record level.

So it basically means that to use it you have to use professional source. It also means that it is very limited. Piece of crap for me.

Limited? Not really. Your saying it's a limited POC because you have POC gear feeding it?

Maybe, and this may be radical, look at the specs BEFORE you buy something? Rather than trashing it because YOU failed to buy what you needed.

You are totally correct. I shoot weddings too and DR-40 works perfect for me.
