TASCAM DR-40 with RODE Videomic?

For my upcoming short film, I'd prefer to have the best sound quality I can without breaking the bank. I have an older version of the RODE Videomic, but a light hiss or noise is still produced. I've heard the TASCAM DR-40 is an excellent audio recorder, so I was thinking: connecting the videomic to a boom pole, run an extension wire from the videomic to an XLR adapter into the DR-40. Would this produce superior sound quality, and is it worth it to buy? Thanks!

It depends. What is the short for? Is it just for you to make in order to learn the process of film making? If so, then I'd say work with what you have and don't break the bank.

Are you looking to get into festivals and have this be part of a demo reel? If so, then I'd go with a proper shotgun mic, shock mount, windscreen, boom pole, and recorder. You can rent those things as purchasing all that can add up really fast, even for low cost stuff.

I think the older Videomic has an unbalanced 3.5mm connection plug. The TR-40 has an XRL -1/4" combo connector line/mic switchable. You could conceivably get a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter, assuming the plug is wired for mono and the mic is battery powered. Due to the unbalanced connection, the cable run would need to be as short as possible, and Phantom Pwr. must be off, or damage to the mic can occur.
That said, I would recommend a different mic with an XLR connection.
