Tascam dr-40 getting weird audio noise?

I need some help figuring out why my audio is coming out with this weird sound in the background. I have tried different mics and different chords and keep getting this problem. I set my tascam dr-40 to mono xlr-1 and the audio was fine for 10 minutes then this sound started up. I switched to xlr-2 input and still had the same problem.

I switched the tascam settings to stereo and got fine audio for a few minutes then the sound came back. Everything was sitting still so it doesn't have anything to do with me moving things around. Battery was full and memory card had tons of space. I have had this problem before, i get good audio for a little while then this weird sound starts up.

anyone know where this sound comes from or why im getting it?

How have you configured the recorder? What mic?

From the Tascam website" The DR-40 is only designed to work with balanced microphones. Do not use an unbalanced microphone with the DR-40."

My DR40 acting weird too - the input levels will automatically rise to a hundred percent in every mode except dual. The problem started when I started using rechargeable batteries, even though I changed the battery setting in the menu. I haven't tried normal batteries yet as I'm fine with using dual mode, but perhaps that's the problem for you too.

Are the record menu parameters set to manual? Recording to a WAVE format? What mic are you using? There's a fair amount of acoustically borne BG noise and the room sounds live, but that's not a recorder issue.

a rode ntg-2 mic, not sure what a balanced mic is (noob here).

I have not installed any firmware either.

I am using a rode ntg-2 mainly and record to a WAV file. I see no where in the menu to record to auto settings so I assume everything is set manually

- Not nessescerilly, there are a few different record settings, Manual, AGC, Peak set and limiter, ect. I don't have the machine or manual at this moment so check the manual.

This "bug" is supposed to be due to the SR-40 only accepting balanced mics, as bgundu pointed out. I found a supposed fix, that I haven´t tested myself yet: After pressing record, press the menu button - does the sound disappear?
