which of these has the best pre-amps and sound...i know alot of people have the zoom h4n, and i can hear plenty of examples online...only a few tascams, and no marantz...

some people say the tascam dr-100 has stellar pre-amps...is this true? i found a tascam dr-100 brand new for 300...

so i figured i would ask this...

thanks

I can't speak for the H4N, I had a Zoom H4 and made the switch to the DR-100. The main reason I switched is the entirely superior controls on the DR-100. The DR-100 has mostly switch controls, though they are located all over the case. You can actually run the pots on this unit while recording. I am not saying it is as good as a dedicated mixer, but it is very workable without one. The onboard mics on the Tascam are pretty poor, in fact I thought the Zoom was better in this regard. The battery power setup on the Tascam is much better with a genuine backup system. Using Phantom powered mics, the sound is very good to excellent. Dynamic mics, not so much and would recommend a mixer in front to add some gain. Overall, it is a good recorder.

I think the H4N even doesn't have any pre-amps, because the two external inputs are very insensitive. I use them with XLR mikes and I get a lot of noise. I use them about 2 meters from two talking people.
