TASCAM DR-100 uni mic audio feedback problem

When I place TASCAM DR-100 next to a land line phone or a metal cup it records a very loud audio feedback sound. This happens ONLY when I record via onboard unidirectional mics, and does NOT happen while recording with internal omni or external lav mic connected via XLR. I tested with two DR-100 units and both have the same problem.

Is this normal/expected? Internal mics on Zoom H4n don't have this problem.

Do you the monitor turned on? I have been using a DR-100 quite a bit with both internal and external mics, and the only problem I noticed was when in close proximity to IPHONES, and the the IPHONE polls for mail or rings, even on silent mode, I get horrible noise in the DR-100. I don't use the onboard speaker and have monitor turned off, and monitor with headphones.

No, monitor is set to OFF.

I just tested and I didn't notice any problem while calling or receiving calls on an iPhone 4 which I held right next to a TASCAM DR-100. I did get a really bad audio feedback as soon as I pressed "Talk" button on a wireless headset of my landline phone which I was using to call my iPhone. I remember someone mentioning this problem with the iPhone during recent Phil Bloom's seminar in Boston, but like I said, I couldn't replicate this problem.

I also use headphones to monitor. That is when I heard the feedback. I also tested by playing recorded file to make sure this feedback is being recorded.

Is it? And I take it your'e hearing the feedback in your headphones?

Try recreating it, only time time, unplug the headphones and let it record without them. This is really weird.

Yes, I do hear this feedback in my headphones while recording.

I did try that already with the same result. To be more specific I got this problem when recorder was close to the stainless steel coffee mug and metal mesh type of pencil holder. I also tested by moving it close to a Mac Pro and other pieces of equipment, metal pieces, whatever I could find in my office and no other items caused this problem.

Can you do me a favor? If you have a landline phone and/or something similar to a stainless coffee mug, can you try replicating this problem with your unit and let me know? If you get the same results, then I'll know for sure that I either have to avoid these situations or simply return Tascam DR-100 and keep only Zoom H4n.

Wierd....I'll try it later tonite and see if I have the same experience and drop you line tonite or tomorrow.

Of course, you could sell them both and step up to the edirol R-44 with the oade mod.......that's on my wish list.
