Tascam DR-100 Settings

So I recently made the switch over from the Zoom H4N to the Tascam DR-100, the main reason was to have control over the audio levels on both XLR inputs, but I was just wondering what is a good proper setup with the levels using the Tascam DR-100.

Is it better to have the mic gain set to M with the levels riding at around 8 or is it better to have it set to H with the levels much lower, being at around 3.

I'm guessing whatever brings it closer to the target of -6 through -12 db area but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

When I tested my own DR100 running mics directly to the recorder, I found that the high gain setting was the only thing that worked. That allowed the trim controls to have more adjustment rather than being pegged near maximum on the medium setting. I must also say that dynamic mics were pretty marginal regardless of setting. Phantom powered mics sounded great.

If you were running a mixer in front of the DR100, that changes everything and I would take the DR gain down to mid or low and use the (probably better) mixer preamps to supply the gain.
