Tascam DR-100 questions

wow I've never seen this, how does it work..? The BH site doesn't explain very much about how it works. There's mention of USB cables, is that how it transfer power? I was just going to buy a couple of extra regular batteries for it for a whole day's shooting but this looks like it may be a better option.

I don't have it, but plan on getting one for my DR-680 eventually. A lot of guys use that on Taperssection.com. It just has a lot of different jacks that plug into various power inputs on any device. You can switch between power modes (9v, 12v etc) and use this for whatever.

Is it true that the 2 xlr volumes have to be set to the sane level on the h4n? (I.e- your wireless receiver and shotgun need to both be set to the same volume ) If so and if I read right that the tascam has a physical dial to control xlr volumes instead of accessing through a menu as I believe you need to on the h4n then this may tip me towards the tascam once and for all..

I don't own the H4n but I think the latest firmware allows left and right levels to be set separately, but they do need to be set from a menu.

H4n does indeed allow the 2 XLR levels to be set seperately with the newest firmware. It doesn't go via menu, press input 1 or 2 button on the front to select it, then rec level + or - on the side to adjust, the level is displayed on the screen

Ah that actually sounds quite simple then. Thanks guys. I think the zoom may have the edge because of price and line in via xlr or jack

can the newest firmware be applied to any model regardless of age? Just wanted to check before I buy that I dont buy an incompatible one

i still suggest you go and test the 2 recorders in a shop. you'll be surprised by the real feel of each device. might be crucial.

there just isnt anywhere remotely near me that would stock both of these items. This sort of thing is 100% online unfortunately

I figure since B&H is in New York, it's just a 5 hr plane ride to the UK. That's a shorter distance than to my place in Northern California. It's worth running the numbers on.

its the import tax into the UK thats the killer. No way to avoid it and brings the price over what you can buy something for in the UK.

I'm holding off on the purchase of a glidecam for the same reason. Holiday time i guess...

So out of curiosity, how does one hook up two wireless lavs to the DR-100? Would you use a cable splitter on the 1/8" input or some kind of XLR to 1/8" adapter cables on the XLR jacks?

In turn, on the H4n I assume you can just run the two wireless lav receivers into the 1/4-XLR jacks via 1/4" to 1/8" adapters?

I'm interested in one of these recorders myself, just not sure which is better for weddings where I have to run two wireless lavs.

My G3s came with a cable (1/8" to XLR) which connects the reciever(s) to the DR-100 via XLR.

One thing that was brought up elsewhere is that the tripod mount on the Tascam is plastic and gets stripped pretty quickly if you use the tripod mount often. The Zoom has a metal tripod mount.
