Tascam DR-100 - Continous line-out for in-cam sound?

Hi,

Short version: Does the DR-100 line-out work when it's not recording?

Longer version: I'm looking to get the DR-100 for sound recording with my GH2 & Rode XLR Shotgun. To be honest, I was originally looking at the JuicedLink DT454 but I can get the Tascam for the same price. I don't necessarily need dual-system sound but it's nice to have, and it's certainly nice not need to tether the mic to the camera. (previously I've used an Edirol UA-25 and laptop for untethered sound recording).

If I hook the DR-100 line-out to my GH2 (using a - 35db attenuation cable and 3.5 -> 2.5mm adapter) will I get sound into the GH2 without needing to hit record on the DR-100? Of similar quality to a JuicedLink DT454? Accidents happen, and I can certainly foresee a scenario where we forget to roll sound (it's often a 1/2 man crew with quite demanding shoots).

Thanks,

Sam

If it's a demanding shoot, not sure how you can forget half/part of the work demanded...

As for your question, I believe you have to hit a button before any recorder sends signal to output: at least you need to power it up and set it in standby mode. My Tascam recorder (DR-680) sends output signal in standby mode. I think DR-100 works the same way.

Tascam has overheat issues with intensive use. Since it sounds like you won't have someone monitoring this could happen and go undetected.

obviously a sound person is my suggestion, but like forest said, turn on monitor and that with do what you need.

I've never had overheating issues with my DR-100, only my 680 and that was in a bag, next to the mixer, with ambient temperature of 95F+, and running nearly non-stop for 3+hours.

LOL. Fair point, but these aren't professional or paying gigs. When there's just two of us amateurs trying to film, light, direct, set-dress, record sound and keep an eye on continuity you'd be amazed at the stuff it seems we're capable of forgetting. I'm just trying to keep the possible number of errors (and their effects) to a minimum ;)

Thanks for your answer :)

Mitch, have you had this happen to you? Which recorder? GP had some issues in very hot weather with the 680, do you have other information?

This hasn't been a problem for me with either recorder.

Yes, last weekend I was in the hot sun all weekend. The first day it was fine but tthe second it overheated 3 times throughout the day. I've had the recorder since it came out and hadn't had an issue until now. But now it seems to just crap out with heavy use after that, even indoors. Keep in mind I'm up north and my hot is not as bad as yours may be.As for any new information I've read I have none. Just assumed the same issue as the 680.

I'm using HS mode, not sure if this may be the source of the issue?? I just started to use it for 96k but I may switch back and see if this may be the issue for some reason.

I was using 96k for sounds I was getting but left it on for dialogue as well. Though I know it is not necessary.
