I'm planning to buy a GL2 or an AG-DVX100A during the holidays but before, I would like to order some mini dv tapes. Which brand and model to buy? I know Panasonic has tapes from 7$Can to 25$Can...
they says the 25$ ones are professionnal but what's the difference?

The only thing I heard about miniDV tapes is don't use Sony's tapes with other brand because they use a lubrifiant on their tapes and the other companies use dry tapes....

It is true that Sony uses a wet-lube in their tapes (oil) and Panny uses dry lube (grease). Grease is less susceptible to environmental conditions, and both Canon and Panasonic recommed its use. I just asked the Canon guys at DVexpo and they re-iterated that. I don't know the conversion rate, but a AY-DVM63MQ (master quality) tape should sell for $5.65 USD: http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AYDVM63MQ

The reason these are more expensive is they have higher quality metal particles in them and twice as many particles as the AY-DVM63PQ (the pro-quality), so the video sticks to the tape better. ;D

Re: Tapes

I think the more important question is the GL2 or DVX100, obviously everyone here is a DVX supporter. But I had my GL2 for about 2 years and loved it, but about three months ago I got my hands on a DVX100. The GL2 does not compare, I didnt know what love was until I tried the DVX, so I sold my GL2 and now sleep with the enemy. The only benefit of the GL2 would be price, but I could say that about a $20 VHS-C palmcorder. ;D

Re: Tapes

I started out looking at the GL-2 and the DVC-30. Then I looked at the xl-1. Thankfully somebody recommended I look at the DVX. Buying it was the smartest thing I've done since I married my wife.

Re: Tapes

That is so doggone sweet, dude! I must say that camera has done more to improve filmmakers' lives than most other inventions of the last 3 years. ;D
