Tapes in fridge...funny problem

Okay so I know it is common practice to keep film for still film cameras in the fridge. Obviously mini-dv is not the same thing...

However I am filming a documentary that consists of a three week road trip. We will be travelling a an RV with a refrigerator. We are using 2 and sometimes 3 cameras, and I have 400 tapes to pack. The RV is to its gills with equipment, and we are running out of room.... except for the refrigerator!

Will it damage or change the mini-dv in any way if I keep it in a refrigerator? It would also save time from having to transport tapes often if I new that they weren't being baked in the car because they are in the fridge! Dust free is also a plus! Any experienced answers or wise advice?

Thanks

Well, that's a new one--putting DV tapes in the fridge.:) I'd worry about storing tapes in a high-moisture environment and condensation on the tapes after moving them from the fridge to the warm air. It seems like its asking for head clog and transport problems.

Never do it.

Like Barry says, you're begging fo trouble.

Keep them in a dry environment (case), with a few silica packs inside.

Thought it was worth a try. Thanks for the replys. I live in a small town with basically a wolf camera, Best buy, and a circuit city. Do they sell silica packs there?

A hobby or craft store sells large bags of silica gel. It's used for drying flowers.

Remember to dry it out in an oven occasionally.

It's okay to put film in the refrigerator because they're in air tight containers. If you have an air tight container for your tapes, then it may be okay, too. But make sure you warm it up to room temperature before opening the container. Otherwise you will get condensation. It's probably more hassle than it's worth.

If you have a Best Buy and a Circuit City you live in a Metropolis compared to me. Best we can do is a Ritz Camera at the mall.

I hear you grits. It really is frustrating not having the resources around you. I haven't seen a Ritz Camera since I lived in Cookeville Tenessee! And yes it was at what they called the "mall" too. I guess I am perhaps more fortunate than I thought... but as you can imagine, trying to gear up for anything around here ends up being a shipping nightmare. All I need is some freakin CTB gel!
