Tapeless Workflow Archiving Solution

A day of shooting could easily take 100gb. If the service is an online service requiring broadband, keep in mind that to transfer from someone's computer to the server would require us - the clients - to have an insanely fast upload rate to get it done in a decent time frame. Verizon Fios has a package for $80/month that offers upload rates at a blazing 10mbps - Which would take 28 hours of stable, uninterrupted internet connection being maxed out on the upload to archive to the archival server solution.

Now, if I could backup 100gb in 8 hours to a storage server that offered 2tb of space and didn't cost an arm and leg, that would be AWESOME and I would pay for that peace of mind without question. But I don't think ISP speeds are there yet at a decent price, or storage that is low cost enough for YOU to provide decent pricing for US... yet.

Now - 5 years from now, when upload rates (to archive TO server) are 40mbps standard, I think that could be a different story entirely - a 7 hour overnight upload to a remote, secure data storage center would be very reasonable and worthwhile. Even better, download speeds could likely be twice as fast, allowing a restore of all that data in just 3-4 hours of time. However, today, those speeds are barely affordable/available even in the highend tiers of internet - at least in the USA (we're pretty behind in broadband).

Thanks for your input, ZeDood and PerroneFord.

Warwickt, I will keep you posted and appreciate your insight into cost-effective archiving solutions. I will be looking more closely at your posts for the finer details of your workflow.

HI JAson, cool. Yeah there's quite a few people looking at DATA TAPE once again for archiving.
