Tapeless video capture

What is the best and cheapest method of capturing straight to a hard drive from the cam? Heard there were some problems with the QuickStream, Nnovia is expensive as hell, there's gotta be something cheaper out there... it's a HDD for god sakes. I dont need any bells, whistles or other fancy features, just need something that captures.

Best? Firestore FS-3 or Sony DSR-DU1.

Cheapest? Er, well, if you already have a laptop computer, you could just run your capture application on it and record straight from the firewire...

Nnovia "expensive as hell"? Here I take exception -- the nNovia is less than half the cost of the FireStore FS-3, and almost half the cost of the Sony. It's a little more expensive than the QuickStream and CitiDisk, but from all reports the nNovia ACTUALLY WORKS, for one thing, and it also does things the QuickStream and CitiDisk don't do (like play back clips).

If you want something that just captures, and you want it cheap, I don't think a product exists right now that's right for you. The CitiDisk and QuickStream and ADS PyroDrive (all basically the same product) are the cheapest, but they have issues, so you might want to keep an eye on them for the next major revision.

If you want a product that actually works, looks like the nNovia is the ticket, but admittedly it's a little more than a QuickStream.

thanks barry. i guess it's all a matter of perspective. I'm still amazed at the price of these things... I mean, a 40GB HDD can be had for around $40-$50. Even a fairly new and decent laptop w/ 60gb's (7200RPM) can be had for under $1K. I'm surprised just a simple unit (no playback or anything) hasnt been made for cheap. Maybe it's a lot more complicated to produce than i think, or perhaps it's just supply and demand...
