Tape Problems

I shot about 7 minutes of minidv footage using a canon gl2. a week or so later i shot more footage on the rest of the tape.

now i am trying to log this footage in fcp. i was able to capture the part of the tape i shot later just fine. the part i shot earlier (the first 7 mins or so) isn't working.

i've tried logging it as several clips then batch capturing - it said it wasn't able to identify the time code. then i tried logging it as one big clip then capturing - it crashed fcp. then i tried using the "capture now" feature - also crashed fcp.

then i tried to get the footage using imovie - that didn't work either. it crashed imovie.

any idea why i'm having this problem or how to solve it?
