Tape problems/Expiration date?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm not sure where to post this question. Over the weekend we videotaped a wedding for a client, everything went well, or so it seemed. No problems from either camera (both xh-a1). When we went to import the tapes(sony HDV) there was timecode that skipped around, and no video. After looking through the tape the timecode disappeared completely. This happened on ALL tapes from BOTH cameras, so I don't think this is a dirty playhead problem. I tried recording at the end of one of the tapes and it didn't record, so I pulled out a different tape (one I had bought about a month earlier) and it recorded and played just fine. Could I have a bad batch of tapes? Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Now I have to explain to the client that they do not have a wedding video, and refund their money. Can the store I bought them from or Sony be liable for the money we lost?

Yes, it is possible to get a bad tape. Even a bad batch of tapes. If you look carefully at the mouse-print you will see that the manufacturer and the vendor specifically disclaim any liability.
