Tape dropout screws up audio sync

I recently shot an interview to MiniDV on my HVX200 and had some issues when trying to capture to FCP 6. I noticed the audio would drift by the end of my capture and after a few attempts realized there was a weird dropout happening near the beginning of my capture which then threw the audio out of sync by 8 frames.

The tape plays back fine in the camera, I just get the glitch when capturing. Any way around this? For now I've just shifted my audio 8 frames after the glitch. Also, any way to prevent these glitches? I shot on a brand new Panasonic MQ tape and a basically brand new HVX200 (I usually record to a Firestore).

Thanks,
Dave

I used the same camera this past weekend (onto MiniDV as well) and have a similar issue, at least that's what it sounds like. What's bizarre is that my sync issues appear to be happening only in FCP and not in my Quicktimes (in my capture scratch folder). When I try importing what appears to be a good QT clip from capture scratch into FCP, the clip is no longer synced when played in my Viewer (and also in the sequence). I've set my capture settings to match my audio rates, so that's not the issue...especially knowing that my QTs appear to be fine.

Has any one else encountered this?

One possible reason for unsynched audio would be your audio capture settings on FCP - they need to be the same as camera settings when footage was shot.

if you're capturing in final cut and doing something else on the machine, sometimes it can drop frames. i've had that happen.

setting it to 99% speed CAN sometimes fix it if it's the exact # of frames missing. one time it was off for me by 7 frames, so i went in and just cut up the audio in 7 different spots and dragged them one frame forward so that every 7 or 10 minutes it "skipped" a frame in audio to resync.
