Tape/Capture Problem

I am having some serious problems capturing a tape I shot last weekend. When I try to capture, no timecode appears and only the far-left side of the image is visible. The rest of the image is pixelly an green and generally very messed up. I changed the device settings to "non-controllable device" in order to generate timecode for the tape, but that doesn't solve the image problem. I shot with an HVX200 and am capturing on a Sony DSR11. I tried capturing from the camera too, but got the same problem. Anyone ever encounter this before?

What was the format you shot to tape with? DVCPro or DVCam? Not sure what that camera shoots when it goes to tape.

Capt,

The HVX internal recorder is just a miniDV tape. Not sure if it does DVCam or just DV, but to do the DVCPro record you have to use the cards or an external hard drive solution (Firestore, etc.).

axxda,

Just out of curiousity, when connecting your devices to your computer, are they the only firewire device being connected? Do you happen to have any firewire hard drives also hooked up? That can sometimes be an issue if both ports are on the same bus or if you're daisy chaining the VTR through the hard drive.

cheers.

It's a Panasonic tape. I recorded more on the same camera and the same tape even, but never had the same problem. I'm very confused about what could cause this. Hair within the tape? But the problem is present consistently through 50 minutes, not just a 1 second artifact. :(

Well then maybe a head problem? Have you tried recording to a fresh tape? See if problems are still there or not? If they are happening on new tapes then maybe there is an issue with the heads and you need to have it serviced.

cheers.
